Morgan Stanley Investment Management (MSIM) strives to provide outstanding long-term investment performance, service, and a comprehensive suite of investment management solutions to a diverse client base, which includes governments, institutions, corporations, and individuals worldwide. Morgan Stanley Investment Management Technology is responsible for the design, development, delivery, and support of the global technical platforms that support the MSIM Business.
The individual will be working within the MSIM Global Risk and Analysis Technology team (GRA IT). GRA IT uses a mix of vendor products and in-house developed systems for measuring, controlling, and reporting investment risk metrics and performance analytics across the division's $1.6 Trillion in Assets Under Management (AUM), covering equity, fixed-income, alternative, and multi-asset portfolios. GRA IT also supports the monitoring and reporting of operational risk, model change management, and an exposure reporting platform that allows the drill-down of exposure of the $1.6 Trillion in AUM.
GRA IT currently has staff in New York, Boston, and West Conshohocken (near Philadelphia) in the US, Montreal in Canada, and Bengaluru in India.
We are seeking a business-aware Software Engineer III to join GRA IT in its New York office. This is a Director level position (P3) and a great opportunity for an experienced developer to join a professional development team, working on strategic initiatives as they replace key business systems and adopt a cloud-first platform.
What you’ll do in the role:
Build and maintain Java Spring Boot services, ETL flows, and Python data quality rules based on requirements provided by the business
Maintain the schemas and contents of our operational data stores (ODSs) and data warehouse on both DB2 and Snowflake databases
Respond to support queries and system or data alerts. Perform detailed data analyses to troubleshoot system anomalies. Document process enhancements
Work closely with business users, external vendors, Morgan Stanley's central IT teams, and other MSIM IT teams globally
Participate in SDLC lifecycle as required by the firm to develop, deploy, and support. Perform software hygiene tasks to ensure software is properly upgraded to minimize security risks
What you’ll bring to the role:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or other STEM fields
6+ years of professional development experience, preferably in an environment that focuses on distributing data via microservices or APIs
Demonstrable experience in Core Java (1.8 and above), including Spring and Spring Boot framework
Knowledge of SQL and Java and Python database connectivity, especially those with DB2, Snowflake, or SQL Server
Strong knowledge of Service Oriented Architecture and RESTful services
Strong knowledge of Python
Experience working in UNIX or Linux environments
Strong communication skills. Strong ability to clearly document user requirements in Jira epics or stories and to translate those requirements into technical designs
Preferred Skills
Experience working in the financial services industry and knowledge of the investment management business
Implementation experience in cloud-based platforms will be a plus
A strong mathematical background or understanding of financial quantitative calculations, ideally in calculating portfolio analytics (performance, attribution, and risk)
