Job Duties
This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by the Public Water Supply Supervision Grant, for a fiscal year period ending June 30, 2025, but renewable annually. The availability of funding is scheduled for review before the grant expiration date and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.
The Virginia Department of Health, Office of Drinking Water (ODW) is seeking an Environmental Health Technical Specialist to act as the non-community waterworks program supervisor of the Southeast Field Office (located in Norfolk)! This is an exciting opportunity Virginia to have an immediate impact at an office filled with passionate public professionals dedicated to ensuring Virginians are provided with health safe and reliable drinking water.
The service area is a mix of rural, suburban, and urban areas. Localities served include the counties of Accomack, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Isle of Wight, James City, Mathews, Northampton, Gloucester, Prince George, Southampton, Surry, Sussex, and York, and the cities Chesapeake, Colonial Heights, Emporia, Franklin, Hampton, of Newport News, Norfolk, Petersburg, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Hopewell, Beach, and Williamsburg. There are a variety of sizes and types of waterworks in the service area, including small groundwater systems and large, complex municipal systems with advanced treatment technologies.
Under Section 32.1-167-176 of the Code of Virginia and the Federal Drinking Water Act, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is required Safe to provide safe drinking water regulations. This position surveillance and sanitary surveys; reviews operating reports; performs investigates consumer complaints. The incumbent will prepare notices of violation and initiate enforcement actions. Technical aspects of alleged the job include managing databases, chemical analyses review, and technical assistance and training to waterworks owners and operators. providing The position will also serve as the non-community waterworks supervisor and subject matter expert for the Southeast Virginia program Field Office.

Minimum Qualifications
• Working knowledge of drinking water regulations, project management, and
knowledge of technology associated with provision of drinking water.
• Ability to perform independent research, develop analytical results from independent
data sources.
• Present information clearly and directly to both technical and public audiences.
• Interpret, evaluate, and communicate federal and state regulations.
• Experience working with stakeholders (Technical Assistance providers or small
waterworks).
• Excellent oral and written communications skills.
• Ability to interpret technical documents.
Additional Considerations
• Working knowledge of chemistry, biology, microbiology, and math.
