Community Prevention Advocate

Here’s what you’ll be doing: 

• Provides a model for people in recovery and staff by demonstrating recovery is possible, as well as sharing suggestions of positive steps toward recovery including accepting responsibility of personal change 

• Develops and maintains a network of community partners to expand the impact of FCP services, seeks out new resources to strengthen the offerings of FCP BH and promotes culturally relevant pathways to recovery for the FCP community 

• Promotes FCP BH through speaking engagements at conferences, cultural events, and meetings, and plans and coordinates events and activities to engage new patients in clinical and non-clinical services 

• Works within the care team and assists clients with their treatment plans as directed by the Behavioral Health providers/care team.  

• Assists recovering community members with identifying their own personal interests and goals in relationship to recovery and health, and conducts active outreach efforts to encourage attendance and participation in recovery-oriented, self-help, and pro-social groups 

• Supports connections and develops relationships with community based, mutual self-help groups by attending AA/ALANON/NA meetings as appropriate and may facilitate and/or co-facilitate weekly recovery support group(s) and provides back up to Recovery Coaches 

• Coaches recovering community members with visits to community resources in an effort to assist them in becoming familiar with potential opportunities 

• Meets clients/guests with Substance Use Disorders prior to discharge from facilities and facilitates clients/guests access to next stage of treatment, and teaches real life hands on skills that an individual may need to successfully use community resources.  

• Negotiates, creates opportunities for access to treatment and social services for clients/guests; advocates on behalf of clients/guests to help decrease barriers to care 

• Maintains contact either by phone, email, face-to-face visit after the recovery person is on their own and successfully maintaining continuous sobriety, and to help provide re-engagement support in partnership with others in the agency(s) if so needed.  

What you’ll need to be successful: 

• Certified Peer Support Specialist or willingness to achieve Certification within 18 months of hire preferred but not required. 

• Some education in prevention desired but will train. 

• Individuals with lived experience in mental health or substance use disorder recovery preferred 

• FCP Community Member preferred or someone that is tribally affiliated and familiar with our community.  

• Demonstrates and shares their own personal recovery experiences and to develop real (authentic) peer-to-peer relationships, and an understanding of the role and professional boundaries 

• Willingness to attend trainings and ability to demonstrate competencies expected of the role  

• Must possess a working knowledge of the drug and alcohol treatment system, a good understanding and respect for each individuals journey of recovery and involvement in the Forest County Potawatomi Community to demonstrate commitment to the recovery community 

• Must have the ability to work with others across the tribal community and to work closely with mental health and other agencies that could be involved during a client entry into services   

• Ability to work evening and weekend hours’, ensures flexibility with schedule and willingness to accept assignments with little or no previous notice, and shares the role of staffing after hours hotline for community members in need of AODA support 

• Valid driver’s license preferred, as the position will benefit from the ability to offer transportation 

• Must possess proof of applicable health department testing and vaccinations or testing/vaccination will be provided by FCP Employee Health 

• Employees working in alcohol abuse or drug treatment fields are required to be free from alcohol abuse and illegal drug use for at least two years prior to placement, and while working in the position.
