Job OverviewThe Assistant Director of Transportation Fleet Services will provide leadership and operational oversight for district fleet services, including acquisition, maintenance, safety, compliance, and lifecycle management of school buses and white-fleet vehicles. The Assistant Director will partner with transportation centers/shops to ensure safe, efficient, and customer-focused service that supports student transportation across the District.
Position Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance, Operations & Safety
- Leads the district’s fleet maintenance program for all buses and white-fleet vehicles; standardizes shop procedures and methods across transportation centers.
- Ensures shops are adequately staffed and equipped; assigns and oversees work for shop foremen, assistant foremen, parts technicians, and body shops in coordination with area leadership.
- Implements and monitor quality control, preventive maintenance schedules, and timely work completion.
- Maintains a safe shop environment; enforces established safety procedures/techniques (e.g., lifting, climbing); models safety culture.
- Operates district vehicles and transports students when needed to support operations.
- Approves purchases for fleet services in alignment with district purchasing guidelines.
- Assists with development and management of the operating budget; justifies expenditures and monitors cost controls.
- Develops specifications and makes recommendations for bids and service contracts; prepares supporting documentation for buses, shop equipment, fuel, and related services.
- Works collaboratively with center Area Directors/Assistant Directors to ensure staffing alignment and operational coverage.
- Makes recommendations regarding hiring, placement, transfer, retention, and dismissal of shop personnel.
- Creates, maintains, and schedules continuing training for shop staff; contributes to new-hire onboarding/orientation for all shop personnel.
- Sets expectations for customer service, punctuality, reliability, and professional conduct.
- Compiles, maintains, and files all required reports and records.
- Interprets, applies, and ensures compliance with laws, regulations, guidelines, and policies related to transportation of students and staff.
- Supports the development, evaluation, and enforcement of transportation policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Safeguards confidentiality related to students and employees.
- Provides responsive service and clear communication to campuses, departments, parents, vendors, and community partners to ensure a positive customer experience.
- Participates in staff development and district initiatives; models professionalism and collaborative problem-solving.
- Supports district and department priorities through strong work ethic and reliable attendance.
- Supervises, manages, and leads the Fleet Services Specialist, Parts Manager, body shop operations, and assists in the supervision of shop personnel at transportation centers.
- Interviews and performs evaluations of assigned personnel
