About the Role

Carrier is seeking an experienced and dependable HVAC Engineering Staff Lab Technician for our 2nd shift (3pm to 11:30pm) operations in Charlotte. This is a high impact, hands on role where you will be responsible for the technical execution of test runs on water cooled and air-cooled commercial chillers. As a member of the lab team, you will act as a "technical detective," utilizing your troubleshooting expertise to maintain test lab productivity during a critical production ramp up.

This role is designed for a proactive problem solver who thrives in complex, high-speed environments. You will manage massive infrastructure, including high flow hydronic pumping systems and high-power electrical setups. You are the final gatekeeper of quality and reliability, ensuring that mission critical cooling units destined for hospitals and data centers are tested to perfection before they leave our facility.

What You Will Gain

  • Competitive Compensation: Competitive base pay with applicable shift premiums for 2nd shift
  • The Impact You Will Make: You ensure that every chiller tested on your shift meets the exact specifications of our customers. You are the final guardian of the trust our clients place in Carrier.
  • Operational Excellence: By driving high lab productivity and maintaining equipment uptime, you directly influence our ability to scale operations and meet global demand.

Key Responsibilities

  • Test Execution: Personally execute test runs, set up chillers with relevant instrumentation (flow meters, pressure sensors, etc.), and monitor data acquisition systems.
  • Electrical Expertise: Work safely with electrical equipment, including 460V/3ph/60Hz machinery, while maintaining EPA certification for refrigerant handling.
  • Diagnostics & Troubleshooting: Identify failures in PLCs, VFDs, or instrumentation; apply a "detective mindset" to coordinate repairs and minimize downtime.
  • Precision Calibration: Use and calibrate laboratory equipment for pressure, temperature, flow, and electrical measurements. Expertly handle loop tuning and valve configurations.
  • Facility Oversight: Manage and monitor support infrastructure, including boilers, cooling towers, and high-pressure pumping systems.
  • EHS & Compliance: Champion Carrier’s EHS policy and 5S standards. Maintain a zero-incident environment through strict adherence to arc flash and lockout tagout procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED.
  • 5+ years previous experience servicing/maintaining commercial HVAC equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialized Professional Experience: 5+ years of experience in Chiller/HVAC operations and station maintenance, or 5+ years in a laboratory environment managing high-power mechanical/electrical machinery.
  • Education & Trade: AS or AAS in Mechatronics Engineering Technology (or related technical field), or completion of a formal Skilled Trades Apprenticeship.
  • Electrical Safety & High Power: Comprehensive awareness of High Voltage and High Power electrical safety, including proficiency in Arc Flash protocols and medium voltage operations.
  • Systems & Controls: 2+ years of experience with precise measurement systems (electrical, temperature, pressure, flow) and a proven ability to independently perform loop tuning and manage closed-loop system stability.
  • Software Literacy & Diagnostics: Proficiency in LabView / LabPro applications or National Instruments systems, paired with a functional understanding of PLC diagnostics and complex blueprint interpretation.

Benefits

Employees are eligible for benefits, including:

  • Health Care benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision; wellness incentives
  • Retirement benefits
