Reimagine What’s Possible 

This is a hands-on field position ideal for candidates with strong instrumentation analyzer experience. The Instrument & Controls Technician will work under the Engineering Manager and collaborate closely with the Commissioning team, Operations, and Technical Management. The role is responsible for coordinating and executing mechanical and instrumentation activities during pre-commissioning, commissioning, and startup of new and refurbished facilities. These facilities span multiple technologies including Air Separation (ASU), Steam Methane Reformers (HYCO), Partial Oxidation (POX), Ammonia, H₂ Electrolysis, and CO₂, along with supporting ancillary equipment.

Nature & Scope

The Technician ensures safe, reliable, and efficient preparation and operation of Instrument & Controls systems. Responsibilities include executing preventative and corrective maintenance during commissioning and startup, while working with internal and external teams to meet safety and reliability standards.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Maintain a safe work environment and demonstrate leadership in safety practices.

  • Execute hands-on commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and testing of Instrument & Controls systems.

  • Support commissioning activities, including document control and quality assurance.

  • Lead commissioning efforts to ensure safety, reliability, and maintainability of I&C equipment.

  • Perform Critical Safety Circuit (CSS) validations.

  • Manage Inspection Test Reports (ITRs) and track progress using completions tools.

  • Enforce Air Products safety protocols (LOTO, permits, confined space, etc.).

  • Understand and comply with environmental regulatory requirements.

  • Support construction and commissioning of I&C systems.

  • Ensure adherence to Air Products standards for EH&S, reliability, and customer service.

  • Monitor and execute maintenance activities to meet safety and reliability goals.

  • Maintain technical documentation and commissioning records.

  • Supervise contractors and ensure alignment with safety and reliability standards.

  • Collaborate with engineering and commissioning teams to resolve technical issues.

  • Drive operational excellence and customer satisfaction through commissioning performance.

  • Participate in incident investigations and Root Cause Analysis; implement corrective actions.

  • Communicate effectively with commissioning management and cross-functional teams.

Job Requirements

  • 2-year diploma in Instrument & Controls Engineering or related technical field preferred.

  • Minimum 10 years of hands-on I&C technician experience in gas, petrochemical, or related industries.

  • Experience with analyzers (Teledyne, ABB GCs, Servomex, etc.).

  • Familiarity with DCS and PLC systems (Siemens preferred).

  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, ladder logic, wiring schematics, and single-line drawings.

  • Proficient in using calibration and test equipment (e.g., Pressure transmitters, flow meters, temperature sensors)

  • Experience with control valves, actuators, and instrumentation wiring and hookup.

  • Troubleshooting of motor controls circuits

  • Familiarity with IT infrastructure and basic troubleshooting (Level 1 & 2).

  •  Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and completions/turnover systems.

  • Knowledge of local EH&S and environmental regulations.

  • Understanding of vendor contracts and regional shop support.

  • Up to 70% regional travel with potential for global assignments.

  • Valid driver’s license required.
