About the role

Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced mid-level or Senior UX Researcher to join the Square for Restaurants team.

As a researcher at Square, you'll lead research projects on one of the core Square products that help sellers succeed in their businesses, Square for Restaurants. The Restaurants team within Square empowers Food & Drink businesses of all kinds to run their businesses through advanced workflows, specialized products, business insights, and inclusion in the greater Square ecosystem. You'll report to the Research Lead for Square for Restaurants and be a part of a community of researchers where you can grow in your craft.

We encourage candidates from all different backgrounds and all over the United States and Canada - from big cities to small towns - to apply. We also welcome you to share any personal life experiences that power your empathy for our sellers and desire for this role, particularly if you have firsthand experience in restaurants.

You'll be embedded into a collaborative team of Product Managers, Designers, Data Analysts and Marketers. You'll guide your team by delivering research and bringing customer empathy. Specifically, you will:

  • Design and complete research projects, choosing the right mix of quant/qual methods to answer complex questions.
  • You'll bring your team members into your research process to grow their understanding of our sellers and the problems we're trying to solve.
  • Shape your team's research roadmap. You'll work with team members, to plan and scope research needs from small to large, with guidance from UX Research/Design Leads, and contribute to roadmaps/strategy with your direct cross-functional team.
  • Provide guidance and training on research tools and techniques to help non-researchers to conduct “self-service” research activities.
  • Contribute to the Square-wide research community, including creating ways to enhance the visibility of our research, learning from other's skills and sharing your own, and developing helpful tools and templates.

Qualifications

You have:

  • 5+ years of experience conducting and leading impactful user research, ideally with/at consumer, fintech, financial, digital, or restaurant tech companies.
  • Empathy, knowledge, and a deep desire to improve the lives of the people who work in restaurants.
  • Successful collaborator with experience using research to influence decisions across the whole product development process, working with Product Managers, Designers, Data Analysts, Marketers and more.
  • Expertise designing and leading research using a range of techniques (e.g. 1:1 interviews, concept testing, usability testing, ethnographies, focus groups and co-creation workshops, segmentation studies, value proposition, new product/feature testing, pricing, or others.)
  • Experience conducting survey research end-to-end including questionnaire development, programming, and data analysis.
  • You have project management skills, including planning logistics, coordinating activities with multiple team members and flexibly adapting to changes. A willingness to get hands-on and personally recruit participants.
  • Simple and clear style of communicating findings.
  • Experience conducting research remotely across multiple markets.
