Job Description

NBC News/MSNBC Digital is looking for a Deputy Weekend Photo Director to lead our night and weekend photo coverage. The Deputy will report directly to the Director of Photography and work closely with reporters and editors to execute assignments on a wide range of topics for all NBC News and MSNBC platforms. 

This role is Thursday-Monday 1pm-9pm ET and open to remote in the United States. 
 

Responsibilities:

  • Function as primary photo lead on weekends and evenings. 
  • Manage weekend photo editors, and work with Photography Director to supervise our nearly 24/7 team coverage 
  • Provide clear and conceptually driven guidance and art direction for photography on our websites and social platforms 
  • Research, select and edit images for inclusion in stories published on nbcnews.com, msnbc.com and our digital platforms
  • Commission and photo edit freelance photographers, along with managing contracts and invoicing 
  • Propose and project manage visual coverage ideas during breaking and developing news, including (but not limited to) commissioning on-the-ground photographers, original visual-first narratives, etc.
  • Work with multiple stakeholders to execute daily and long-term assignments from editors on a wide range of topics and areas of coverage
  • Monitor news agency feeds to identify strong images for breaking and developing news stories

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience as a photo editor at a news organization, ideally in a breaking news and digital environment
  • Experience managing a team of photo editors and/or photographers 
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of relevant working experience
  • Developed news judgement and a firm understanding of journalism ethics, image copyright, and digital licensing 
  • Ability to meet deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news production environment; this may involve working on some U.S. holidays
  • Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
     

Additional Job Requirements:

  • Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.
                                                               OR
  • Fully Remote: This position has been designated as fully remote, meaning that the position is expected to contribute from a non-NBCUniversal worksite, most commonly an employee’s residence.
