About the role

Department Background

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: We believe that achieving next-generation scientific breakthroughs requires an understanding of the world’s complex, interlocking systems. We believe that access to nutritious food and a healthy environment is a fundamental human right. We believe that ensuring a prosperous global future depends on the ability to support local people and communities everywhere. By working in and across multiple scientific areas, CALS can address challenges and opportunities of the greatest relevance, here in New York, across the nation, and around the world.

Unique among peer institutions in the United States, the breadth of disciplinary expertise in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment – from ethics and social sciences to conservation genetics and applied ecology – creates a stimulating multidisciplinary atmosphere for our students, staff, faculty and visiting scholars. We have strong collaborative ties across Cornell University, other universities, governmental agencies, and leading environmental and conservation organizations.

Position Summary:

While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.

The position is located within the department of Natural Resources and the Environment. The New York State Hemlock Initiative (NYSHI) is a Cornell University project that research management solutions for hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), and works with scientists, natural resources professionals, and New York residents that are united in their dedication to hemlock conservation. Our research focuses on the Integrated Pest Management of hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), a non-native invasive insect, including development of biocontrol options. We also coordinate state-wide efforts of landowners, state and federal agencies, government officials, and concerned citizens to conserve New York State’s hemlock trees, and conduct public outreach to engage stakeholders and increase awareness of the threats posed by HWA and other invasive forest pests.

This position will assist in administration of NYS Hemlock Initiative (NYSHI) programs, and in extension of applied research to stakeholders throughout the state and region. Duties will include, but not be limited to, assisting in:

  • Providing data used to report to sponsors, including tracking and collating metrics and activities of NYSHI staff.
  • Communication to various stakeholders, including academics, land managers, policy makers, media outlets, and the public.
  • Maintenance of website and research databases.
  • Student intern program management and other student training opportunities.
  • Creation of extension materials that translate state of the art science into applicable advice/tools for management of hemlock forest resources in NY.
  • Travel within New York State to attend meetings, training events, and other job-related responsibilities.

This is a full-time position (39 hours) at 97.50% FTE. This is a one-year term appointment that is contingent upon available work, funding, and performance.

There is the opportunity to work remotely within New York State up to 2 days a week; an on-site presence at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY is required 3 days a week. Additional on-site presence in Morrison Hall may be required to meet department needs.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Employees typically perform this role remotely 1-2 days per week and on-site 3-4 days per week. The university reserves the right to modify, suspend, revoke, or terminate the hybrid work arrangement at any time.
