Establishes strong relationships with other specialists in the market area to make them aware of the benefits and the criteria for inpatient rehabilitation. Since a patient’s opportunity for inpatient rehabilitation is dependent upon referrals from other specialists and acute care providers, the Medical Director’s role in educating other clinicians and developing confidence in the hospital’s services is critical to the hospital’s success and patient access to appropriate services.

Develops a known and visible presence within the hospital with a reputation for being accessible and approachable among the staff, patients and families. The Medical Director will balance clinical care with administrative opportunities to support the needs of the patients by providing onsite leadership, regulatory oversight, and operational guidance.

The duties will include providing initial and follow-up general medicine consultations for the rehabilitation of patients as requested by the staff.  Consultation volume may vary, but on average, approximately 1-2 new consultations per day, and then additional follow-up visits. Consultations should be performed within a 24-hour time period.  Common requests include providing recommendations on managing the patients’ chronic medical conditions as well as any acute medical changes that are recognized by the patient or staff.
