Basic Function:
The Assistant Director for Undergraduate Student Success assists with the daily
departmental operations related to academic advising, providing educational and
vocational guidance for continuing psychology majors/minors and those seeking to
major/minor in psychology.
Supervisory Accountability:
Responsible for providing limited supervision (work study students, etc) for one
or more functions within the department, providing strategic leadership and
operational management related to academic advising duties. May serve as backup in the
absence of the undergraduate studies director.
Nature and Scope:
Internal contacts include senior administrators, faculty, staff , and students. External
contacts include various partners from educational organizations and/or potential sites for student experiential learning sites.
Principal Accountabilities:
Work closely with the director of undergraduate studies (DUS) and department chair (DC) to oversee, coordinate and provide high level academic advising and career planning for students, including those with complex academic, personal, behavioral or career concerns.
Work with DUS and DC to implement and maintain procedures that facilitate new/transfer student orientation, continuing student support and retention, and graduation clearance. Activities include but are not limited to:
• Developing and implementing orientation and onboarding initiatives for incoming psychology majors.
• designing workshops and other resources to support FTIC and transfer student integration.
• serving as a point of contact for new students and families during Bison Week, providing clear communication and guidance for acclimating to campus life.• supporting retention and degree completion through proactive advising, early alerts,and
intervention strategies.
• promoting equity, inclusion, and a student-centered approach in all advising practices.
• managing student graduation clearance process, which includes final degree audits and
student outreach to ensure that students meet departmental and university requirements for degree conferral.
Work with the faculty experiential learning coordinator to promote opportunities for internships, service learning and study abroad programs, collaborating with faculty and campus partners to connect students with high-impact hands-on learning experiences. This includes developing targeted outreach strategies to increase student engagement in co-curricular and career-building activities.
Work with appropriate HU offices (student services, counseling center, office of undergraduate studies, financial services, office of the registrar, COAS dean's office) to provide crisis intervention for students when difficult situa
