Position Summary
Samsung’s Global UX Studio is a New York-based multidisciplinary design studio that creates the future of mobile experiences. As a mix of designers, creative technologists, researchers, and writers, we investigate and iterate on unexplored user needs, emerging technologies, and new form factors to guide product design for the future of One UI and Samsung’s mobile products. Our mission is to look 2-5 years out to create innovative experiences that empower and connect people.We are seeking a Director of UX to establish a bold, creative vision for Samsung’s mobile experiences used by hundreds of millions people worldwide, and lead a world-class team of senior interaction and visual designers. As the Director of UX, you will report to the VP, Head of Global UX Studio, and partner closely with UX Researchers, Design Technologists, and Content Strategists to leverage new insights to develop north-star directions for the company – and to create the experience strategy that’s needed to transform those possible futures into reality. You are at home with hands-on invention, and thrive in the ambiguity and discovery-based pivoting that comes with it. You are an experienced driver of change, with the ability to influence and have out-sized impact on the strategic direction of entire products.
Role and Responsibilities
Strategic UX Design
- Lead the planning and strategic exploration of experience projects. Recognize strategic opportunities, proactively pitch new ideas, and own experience concept development, from ideation to execution.
- Independently identify, organize, deliver solutions for the right problems of broad scope, complexity, and ambiguity
- Articulate a future vision for mobile experiences and a roadmap to get there
- Quickly and iteratively create user flows, wireframes, and low- to hi-fi prototypes for mobile and physical interfaces
Management
- Lead, build, and develop a high-performing team of Interaction and Visual UX designers
- Establish and manage the strategic design roadmap and UX team’s execution against it.
- Drive collaboration and innovation, empowering the team to do their best work through coaching and mentorship
- Drive cross-team collaborations among your team and other designers, researchers, creative technologists within the Global UX Studio and worldwide.
Communication & Culture
- Communicate fluidly and effectively with senior executives and other design team stakeholders – to appropriately inspire, influence, and serve multiple audiences.
- Promote excellent design in the Studio and Samsung with new ways of innovation.
- Cultivate, inspire, mentor, and develop the design community within the studio, across Samsung, and externally in NYC
Skills and Qualifications
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's/Master’s degree in Design, HCI, or equivalent with 15+ years’ experience in design or PhD with 12+ years’ experience. 8+ years’ experience in leading and managing small-to-medium multi-disciplinary UX teams
- Experience in designing mobile interfaces from pre- to post-launch
- Experience in startup, skunkworks, or incubation/innovation projects; comfort with ambiguity and change
The salary range for this role is expected to be between $205,000 and $217,500. Actual pay will be determined considering factors such as relevant skills and experience, and comparison to other employees in the role.
