Overview
The Department of Taxes' Compliance Division seeks a talented individual who wants to support public programs through the accurate and equitable collection of Vermont taxes. This position will be involved with review of taxpayer records for compliance and provide education to taxpayers. The ideal candidate will be inquisitive, collaborative, digitally proficient, and self-motivated and have a desire to learn new skills and software used for tax administration. The ideal candidate will also have strong internal and external communication skills to work supportively with members of the Compliance Division and the public.

Vermont State offers affordable and broad medical, leave, and retirement benefits. Starting annual salary is negotiable based on qualifications and ranges from $49,000 - $67,700. (see below)
Experience and/or education in accounting, finance, auditing, administration, and/or taxation is helpful.
Examples of this position's responsibilities include:
- Review and analyze taxpayer returns
- Prepare tax assessments and adjustments to bring taxpayers into compliance (as appropriate)
- Respond to and work with taxpayers and/or their representatives
- Play an active role in taxpayer appeals and/or settlements
- Conduct on-site audits as appropriate

Telework
The Tax Department permits eligible employees to request participation in the State of Vermont telework program. Telework eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis and is consistent with state and Department policies.

Background Checks
In accordance with federal law, candidates must be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates of positions at the Vermont Department of Taxes. Candidates have the right to withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.

Environmental Factors
Duties are performed independently from home office setting or from a central office location, commonly requiring extensive time in the field at the taxpayer's location. Significant travel may be necessary and incumbents must have a reliable means of transportation. Some audit situations may assume a somewhat adversarial nature, requiring significant tact and persistence to complete a successful audit. Pressure from work deadlines is predictable.
