Control Room Operator Lead

Job Summary:

As the Control Room Operator Lead, you will serve as the senior technical authority for real-time plant operations, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient control of all power generation systems. As the primary subject-matter expert within the control room, this role guides operators, coordinates operational responses, and supports troubleshooting activities to maintain operational excellence. While the position does not include direct supervisory responsibilities, it provides leadership through coaching, procedural discipline, and effective communication with the Operations Manager on plant status, risks, and improvement opportunities. The Control Room Operator Lead also supports maintenance execution and ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading real-time operations during assigned shifts, including system monitoring, start-ups, shut-downs, and responses to alarms or abnormal conditions.
  • Ensuring safe and efficient generation by reviewing and adjusting system parameters in line with established procedures and regulatory standards.
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed shift logs, operational reports, equipment status records, and shift handovers.
  • Serving as the primary operational point of contact in the control room for troubleshooting, decision-making, and communication.
  • Providing operational guidance and mentorship to team members, including onboarding and skill development for new operators.
  • Coordinating field and maintenance activities by supporting lockout/tagout execution, equipment isolation, system restoration, and technical troubleshooting.
  • Promoting operational discipline and adherence to safety procedures, protective tagging, and environmental compliance.
  • Identifying operational risks, inefficiencies, and recurring issues, and recommending improvements that enhance reliability and reduce downtime.
  • Actively participating in incident investigations, safety audits, performance reviews, and root-cause analysis initiatives.
  • Maintaining and updating operational documentation, including procedures, system manuals, and reference materials, to reflect current practices.
  • Communicating effectively with plant leadership, maintenance teams, and shift personnel regarding priorities, system changes, hazards, and equipment issues.
  • Championing a safety-first culture through hazard awareness, immediate reporting of concerns, and strong personal accountability.

Qualifications and Skills:

Your profile is a natural match if you have:

  • Experience as a Control Room Operator or equivalent role in power generation required.
  • Strong command of combined-cycle or large-frame turbine operations preferred.
  • Ability to effectively lead by influence, coach others, and support skill development.
  • Strong troubleshooting, situational awareness, and sound technical decision-making.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, system drawings, and control system data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including shift reporting.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple operational demands.
  • Ability to climb ladders/stairs, stand for extended periods, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
