Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Gallaudet University Hearing and Speech Center (GUHSC), the Clinical Educator (Speech Language Pathology) provides evidence-based comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services in speech-language pathology as well as appropriate aural rehabilitation, entailing a variable allocation of time between direct service provision and clinical supervision based on GUHSC operational and academic program needs.

 

Job Description:

• Provides evidence-based, direct clinical services, including diagnostic evaluations and therapy in a variety of disorder areas. 

• Supervises and trains students for exceptional clinical experience; emphasizes client-centered service and experience; and completes accurate and timely billing and documentation to appropriate parties. 

• Completes required documentation through use of electronic medical records (EMR), including report writing, chart notes, billing and coding of services and diagnosis(es), and communicates, according to state and federal regulations, with appropriate agencies and professionals. 

• Provides supervision to students in GUHSC speech and language practicum; teaches each student in diagnostic assessment and therapeutic methods; guides students in best practice regarding documentation requirements related to service delivery; demonstrates positive interactions with students in order to facilitate students’ self-actualization and development of clinical skills; documents strengths and weakness of students; provides written and verbal feedback of students regarding their strengths and weaknesses, both in clinical execution and written products, and recommends strategies for improvement; and reviews evaluations of supervision by students and use evaluation data to improve performance. 

• Demonstrates current knowledge and experience, and develops expertise and leads efforts to expand clinical service provision, including pediatric speech-language assessment and therapy services, adult speech-language assessment and therapy services, bilingual and/or multilingual speech-language pathology services, pediatric or adult aural (re)habilitation services.

• Participates in and contributes to team, program and department meetings, including engaging in applied clinical research, student-focused subject matter to bridge academic-clinical approaches, collaborating with University programs and community members in clinical education endeavors, student advising, thesis committees, admissions committees, and/or student oral candidacy exams. 

• Participates in peer reviews for evaluation purposes, and in time serves as a mentor for new staff, students, and peers. 

• Participates in and/or contributes to the growth of the GUHSC in the areas of  operational and service development and maintenance, including policy, protocol and procedural updates, maintenance of equipment and materials; and improves upon productivity processes and practices.

• Follows established University, school/program, and GUHSC policies, procedures, and objectives. 

• Adheres to regulations governing confidentiality, including but not limited to HIPAA and FERPA; and respects confidentiality of students, clients, and of colleagues.
