Founded in 1946, the Middle East Institute is the oldest Washington-based institution dedicated solely to the study of the Middle East. It is a non-partisan think tank providing expert policy analysis, educational and professional development services, and a hub for engaging with the region's arts and culture.

About the role

This position reports directly to the Vice President for Policy.  The Fellow/Senior Fellow will research, write, and speak on various topics related to the international security and military affairs of the contemporary Middle East, especially as it pertains to U.S. policy toward the region.  The ideal candidate will be expert at both long-term, in-depth research, as well as rapid reactions to breaking events.  The position benefits from an understanding of both academic techniques and policy relevance.


What you'll do

  • Convene and/or participate in events related to security and military affairs of the Middle East.
  • Participate in panels, workshops, and conferences on these and related matters.
  • Participate in interviews, public discussions, and other media events.
  • Write regular short commentaries for the MEI website and/or alternative outlets.
  • Write longer policy analyses involving more in-depth research and policy recommendations.

Qualifications

  • Senior Fellows should have a PhD plus at least 10 years of professional experience in a relevant field; or a Master’s degree plus at least 15 years of professional experience in government, the armed forces, or another similar field.
  • Fellows should have either a PhD or a Master’s degree plus at least 5 years of professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • In-depth knowledge of Middle East security dynamics, including regional conflicts, geopolitical rivalries, terrorism threats, and state fragility issues.
