Software Engineer, UCC
Komodo HealthAbout the role
We Breathe Life Into Data
At Komodo Health, our mission is to reduce the global burden of disease. And we believe that smarter use of data is essential to this mission. That’s why we built the Healthcare Map — the industry’s largest, most complete, precise view of the U.S. healthcare system — by combining de-identified, real-world patient data with innovative algorithms and decades of clinical experience. The Healthcare Map serves as our foundation for a powerful suite of software applications, helping us answer healthcare’s most complex questions for our partners. Across the healthcare ecosystem, we’re helping our clients unlock critical insights to track detailed patient behaviors and treatment patterns, identify gaps in care, address unmet patient needs, and reduce the global burden of disease.
As we pursue these goals, it remains essential to us that we stay grounded in our values: be awesome, seek growth, deliver “wow,” and enjoy the ride. At Komodo, you will be joining a team of ambitious, supportive Dragons with diverse backgrounds but a shared passion to deliver on our mission to reduce the burden of disease — and enjoy the journey along the way.
The Opportunity at Komodo Health
Generation of a medically-related patient cohort is the gateway to all the work we do at Komodo Health.
As a member of Universal Cohort Creator (‘UCC’), the team responsible for Komodo’s standardized approach to healthcare cohort generation, you are ensuring that every product in our catalog has a standard, performant approach to meeting their core data needs.
You are responsible for the backbone data retrieval and transformations required by our internal service layer used to serve cohort generation along a variety of axes - patients, payers, providers, etc.
This role is primarily backend-focused, but ties into the end-to-end function of the complex cohort generation queries served through the cohort generation API, ensuring adherence to SLAs, and for the underlying caching necessary to support the variety of distinct access patterns across our entire product suite.
Looking back on your first 12 months at Komodo Health, you will have…
- Expanded or enhanced the UCC API’s internal data model to ensure timely performance for all types of cohort generation requests.
- Partnered with product managers to understand the variety of internal and external cohort specification needs across a diverse set of use cases.
- Managed technical dependencies between different microservices to ensure smooth operations.
You will accomplish these outcomes through the following responsibilities…
- Performing updates to the UCC codebase to support product requirements.
- Participating in the agile development process.
- Collaborating with Data Engineers on the team to ensure correct pull-through of new assets, or changes to assets.
- Triage of incoming support requests from our downstream engineering teams.
What you bring to Komodo Health:
- Experience designing APIs for use in web application development (synchronous vs asynchronous response patterns, caching strategies, etc.).
- Experience optimizing data retrieval processes supporting API output, as above, ideally within a low query volume / high data volume environment.
- Demonstrably deep experience with Python.
- Demonstrably deep experience with relevant ‘big data’ processing through a modern MPP database like Snowflake.
- Understand and design for non-functional concerns such as performance, cost optimization, maintainability and developer experience.
- Strong communication with engineers, product managers, and salespeople.
Additional skills and experience we’d prioritize (nice to have)…
- Experience using Iceberg.
- Knowledge of AWS technologies and services.
