Job Summary

Applies principles and techniques of electrical engineering to improve documentation, designs, materials, products, and/or manufacturing methods. Demonstrates expertise in a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Responsible for the design, development, and testing of electrical equipment, components, or systems. Applies mathematical and engineering principles and methods to electrical system designs. Studies new technologies and researches innovative solutions and product designs. May work with research teams to identify needs or resolve problems. Works on advanced, complex technical projects or business issues requiring state of the art technical or industry knowledge. Performs a variety of tasks. Will provide consultation on complex issues and projects and is considered to be the top-level contributor/specialist. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

Job Description

I.        Responsibilities:

Includes but not limited to:

  • In a leadership capacity, plans, develops, coordinates, and directs projects.
  • As an individual worker, carries out complex assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures. 
  • Work is expected to result in the development of new or refined designs, materials, products, and/or manufacturing methods.
  • As staff specialist, develops and evaluates plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities to be carried out by others.
  • Assess the feasibility and soundness of proposed engineering evaluation tests, products, or equipment when necessary data are insufficient or confirmation by testing is advisable.
  • Usually performs as a staff advisor and consultant in a technical specialty, a type of equipment, or a program function.
  • Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. 
  • Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods to resolve designs, materials, products, and/or manufacturing questions and to plan and coordinate work.
  • Requires the use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices of the field and related sciences and disciplines.
  • The knowledge and expertise required for this level of work usually result from progressive experience.
  • Plans and conducts assignments
  • Reviews progress and evaluates results.
  • May coordinate and review the work of a small staff of engineers and technicians.
  • Estimate personnel needs and schedule and assign work to meet completion dates. 
  • Assists with the review and evaluation of personnel performance.
  • May act in liaison capacity with other departments, divisions, and organizations.
  • Evaluates progress and results and recommends major changes in procedures.
  • Operates with considerable latitude for un-reviewed action or decision.

Direction received.  Supervision and guidance relate largely to overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters.  Consults with a Manager or Director and Manufacturing concerning unusual problems and developments.

II.         Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • More than 8 years of professional experience, preferably in large electric motor manufacturing or repair.   

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Has well-developed leadership qualities and previous experience leading others
  • Advanced Degree and/or PE certification

Basic Skills

  • Engineering and Technology Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
