Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school, and one year experience as a skilled mechanic, ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified mechanics preferred.

Overview:
Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of State-owned vehicles; operates electronic diagnostic testing equipment; prepares necessary support billings and reports; answers emergency calls for disabled vehicles.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs skilled mechanical work including but not limited to repairing and reconditioning automobiles, trucks, vans, tractors, snowplows; performs general engine and mechanical repairs, tune-ups electrical systems, heating and cooling systems, brakes and suspensions; repairs and mounts tires, universal joints and differentials, alternators and starters, changes oil and lubricates chassis.
- Operates electronic diagnostic testing equipment to determine and remedy mechanical problems, services vehicles equipped with pollution control systems; may perform some welding.
- Ensures all State-owned equipment is kept clean and in proper working order; keeps work area clean, orderly and safe.
- Answers emergency calls for disabled vehicles, arranges for towing when needed.
- Maintains inventory of materials, dispensing devices and equipment; makes estimates of stock needs; consults with supervisor as to changes in inventory levels; may contact vendors as required for procurement of needed materials and supplies; may approve invoices for payment or make direct payment or goods through petty cash fund.
- Prepares necessary support billings of repair and maintenance forms for work done on vehicles, makes notations and keeps records of service and work provided for each vehicle, gasoline tickets; Prepares paperwork and vehicles for sale through Administrative Services and to secures parts and equipment for repairs and maintenance; prepares weekly reports of jobs and maintenance preformed.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Requires skill in use of tools and machinery employed in motor repairs and adjustment.
- Requires ability to weld and do simple blacksmith operations.
- Requires ability to make work activity reports.
- Requires skill and ability to follow and understand written or oral instructions.
