NYPA is looking for an experienced technologist to help lead NYPA’s cloud platforms and capabilities into the future.  

 

The Lead Cloud Operations Engineer works cross-functionally with other NYPA IT teams to deliver and support Infrastructure–as–a–Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), Infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions to align with our strategic technology goals. The cloud operations engineer will be responsible for identifying optimal cloud-based solutions and maintaining cloud infrastructures in accordance with best practices and internal security policies while staying current with industry trends.

Responsibilities

  • Deployment of cloud hosting environments that include infrastructure and services using IaaS/PaaS/SaaS models in public cloud environments (AWS, Azure).
  • Act as operations lead supporting compute, network, storage, security, and automation  needs in cloud environments with focus on resilience and service availability.
  • Support cloud operations including service and incident response, monitoring, and alerting, change and configuration management, patching, event logging and vulnerability management.
  • Lead continuous improvement and cloud migration exercises to modernize the infrastructure and applications with automation and cloud native services. 
  • Coordinate cloud services deployments with internal architecture and other teams. Collaborate to identify solutions to meet the strategic needs of the organization by utilizing best practices and staying current with industry trends and emerging technologies. 
  • Using metrics and telemetry, monitor and measure consumption, utilization, and performance of cloud components.
  • Maintain cloud infrastructure services to ensure adherence with Enterprise Architecture, IT security policies, and best practices in cloud security.
  • Provide guidance and collaborate with application owners, Solutions Architecture, and Engineering teams to ensure proper architecture, function, and security standards are being followed in NYPA’s hosting environment.
  • Responsible for implementing governance, supporting processes, establishing Service Level Agreements, and monitoring standards and tools for the cloud services platform. 
     

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of public cloud providers (AWS/Azure), services, and infrastructure (VPC, EC2, S3, EBS, EFS, SG, NACL) 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of administering, deploying, and securing cloud environments using automation
  • Strong understanding and experience with cloud concepts: virtualization technologies, IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, HA, distributed systems, automation, and cloud delivery models.
  • Experience with containerization orchestration platforms (e.g. Kubernetes, OpenShift, Docker) 
  • Experience with cloud build and deployment tools (Git, SVN, Azure DevOps, Beanstalk, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy..) 
  • Experience with infrastructure automation and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Azure ARM, AWS Cloud Formation, Ansible, Puppet, or similar tools)
  • Understanding of cloud serverless solutions (S3, CloudFront, API Gateway, Lambda Functions, ElastiCache, SQS, MQ, RDS) 
  • Knowledge and experience with monitoring and telemetry platforms like Splunk, ElasticSearch, Operations Manager, CloudWatch, or other
  • Ability to quickly learn, understand, and work with new emerging technologies, methodologies, and solutions.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with a diverse group of customers, partners, and colleagues

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of combined experience in systems, infrastructure management and/or cloud operations
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience leading or managing teams and projects preferred. 
  • Public Cloud Certification(s) required (ex. AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Experience with Bash, Python, Azure CLI, or other scripting languages preferred
