The 61st Street Service Corporation, provides administrative and clinical support staff for ColumbiaDoctors. This position will support ColumbiaDoctors, one of the largest multi-specialty practices in the Northeast. ColumbiaDoctors’ practices comprise an experienced group of more than 2,800 physicians, surgeons, dentists, and nurses, offering more than 240 specialties and subspecialties.
Job Summary:
The Histotechnologist plays a crucial role in patient care by processing tissue samples to be read and diagnosed by the Pathologist. The job entails a wide range of histology techniques including but not limited to grossing, microtomy, microscopy and staining done with a high degree of accuracy. The incumbent will analyze, resolve, and troubleshoot day-to-day laboratory tasks as needed, as well as facilitate troubleshooting and resolution of routine technical issues. This role will also assist in setting up, evaluating, and trouble-shooting new techniques, policies, and procedures and assist in the training of new hires. Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager and their shift Supervisor, the incumbent will perform laboratory duties as outlined in job responsibilities.
Job Responsibilities:
- H&E staining and cover slipping of all prepared slides
- Perform daily microtomy on paraffin tissue blocks
- Prepare staining solutions for slides to enhance visibility under microscope
- Perform special procedure stains (PAS, GRAM, and FITE, etc.)
- Perform daily microtomy for recuts and additional stains including special and Immunohistochemistry stains requested by the Pathologist
- Perform microtomy on control blocks and Immunohistochemistry control slides
- Operate recycling machine to recycle alcohol and xylene
- Ensure validity of all solutions and reagents
- Embed tissue with proper orientation to ensure proper sections are obtained during microtomy and loss of tissue does not occur
- Perform grossing/dissection of biopsy specimens
- Chang solutions on tissue processors
- Review select policies as required (annual review and training). Recommend policy changes and assist with communication of policy changes to staff
- Assist Laboratory Manager with activities to support LIS and software changes
- Assist with performance improvement data collection and participate in process improvement teams as assigned
- Participate in relevant quality assurance (QA) activities, including reporting causes of error
- Assist with gathering quality control data for periodic reviews. Review quality control data as requested by Manager/Supervisor
- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensures quality control (QC) logs are routinely maintained and up to date
- Notify Lab Supervisor/Manager of equipment malfunctions and maintain competencies with all equipment
- Attend and participate in department and other relevant meetings
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or High School Diploma with an equivalent of histotechnical work experience and training required.
- Must possess New York State Department of Education (NYSED) license or Limited Permit: Pathologists’ Assistant, Clinical Technologist, or Clinical Technician licensure.
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a Histopathology and/or Immunohistochemistry lab required.
- Strong organizational and problem solving skills, and the ability to troubleshoot any histotechnical issues that might arise
- Extensive knowledge of advanced laboratory theory, technique, and testing related to Laboratory Histology practices.
