About the role

What You Can Expect

The Director of Pre-Construction is a key leadership position within ENGIE’s Engineering and Delivery (E&D) team, responsible for contracting grid-scale renewable energy projects—including Onshore Wind, Solar, and Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS).

ENGIE is seeking an experienced and motivated professional with a passion for renewable energy to join the E&D division. Reporting to the Head of Delivery, the Director will collaborate closely with teams across the E&D organization and the broader ENGIE business.

This role focuses on late-stage development activities, ensuring a seamless transition from development to delivery. Key responsibilities include managing bidding efforts, leading contract negotiations, and providing recommendations to ENGIE leadership for contract awards. Once contracts are awarded, the Director will oversee project handover and provide legacy support to the Head of Project Management and project leads—ensuring safe, timely, cost-effective, and high-quality execution of renewable energy projects.

Success in this role requires clear and consistent coordination with a wide range of stakeholders, including developers, internal and external subject matter experts, OEMs, contractors, vendors, owners, and financing partners. The Director must bring exceptional project management capabilities and the ability to lead teams through complex challenges with confidence and clarity. This position also includes direct management of a team of six, with responsibility for coaching, development, and performance oversight.

What You Will Do

  • Provide project management leadership for large-scale wind, solar, and storage projects during the pre-construction phase, ensuring alignment with development teams to support a smooth transition from early-stage development into the delivery and execution phase
  • Oversee engineering design, permitting efforts, and pre-construction activities such as site studies, surveys, preliminary engineering, and cost estimating, offering delivery expertise and technical guidance throughout the pre-construction lifecycle
  • Develop, control, and manage resource plans to ensure adequate staffing and support for all pre-construction activities
  • Lead the RFP process for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services, including bid review, contractor selection, and resolution of technical and specialist issues to manage critical path risks
  • Direct and manage commercial negotiations for project-related contracts, including EPC and major equipment supply agreements (e.g., modules, wind turbines, batteries, substations), providing technical feedback and strategic input in contract negotiations for Major Equipment Supply Agreements and BOP-EPC Agreements
  • Develop robust systems for early-stage project estimates to support formal RFP bid reviews and provide primary inputs for capital project expenditure and budget approval processes to secure budget for Project Delivery Scope
  • Serve as a critical liaison for both internal stakeholders—including development, engineering, interconnection, and power marketing teams—including external partners such as Balance of Plant (BOP) and Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractors, by managing Capex input requests, ensuring cross-functional alignment, and overseeing project execution to meet strategic goals
  • Monitor and manage project schedules and budgets, ensuring alignment with planning targets; proactively assess and document risks through the maintenance of a comprehensive Risk Register during the preconstruction phase
  • Foster and maintain effective working relationships with all parties involved in project development and approval to facilitate collaboration and drive progress
  • Take ownership of a growing portfolio of projects, contributing to the development and continuous improvement of departmental guides, standards, and processes that support operational excellence

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related scientific field, or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in project management and procurement within utility-scale renewable energy and/or heavy construction, including at least 6 years in a Preconstruction Director or similar leadership role
