Job Description

The Transit Bus Driver is responsible for operating shuttle buses to provide safe and reliable transportation for Prairie View A&M University students. This staff position involves driving assigned university transit routes, including trips to on- and off-campus housing, as scheduled.

This position may pay more than the salary listed above depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.  


Responsibilities:

  • Drive a 15-30 passenger bus in a safe and professional manner. Ensure safe transport of students between pick-up and drop-off points within the university campus area and selected off campus sites. Operate Wheelchair and ADA access equipment associated with the shuttle bus to ensure safe and professional accommodation for ADA passengers. Operate a two-way radio and paging system in a professional manner. Drive state vehicles to various parts of campus and are considered essential when the university declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc.

  • Provide seasonal driving services, using vans and other vehicles, for student-athletes, coaches and other athletic staff to various locations to participate in competitions and practices and to be seen by medical professionals. Keep required records associated with travel (relative time in use), mileage and gasoline consumption. Maintain the cleanliness of vehicles and ensure proper levels of fuel before and after each trip.

  • Perform before and after operation maintenance, maintain logbooks, and submit all reports required by the Shuttle Bus Standardized Operating Procedures Guide. Work with special events.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Two years of related work experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to operate several types of buses and vans to the extent of maneuvering safely through congested traffic conditions, adverse weather and road conditions.

Required Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:

  • Must be able to obtain State of Texas class 'B' vehicle operator's license (Commercial Drivers License with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement) within 45 days of employment.

Other Requirements:

  • Bus drivers are required to drive state vehicle to travel to various parts of campus and are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc.

  • Under federal regulation, must not have driver disqualifications as listed in 49 CFR 383.51 - Disqualification of driver.
