Summary
The City of Roanoke is seeking a CERTIFIED Firefighter-Paramedic to perform technical work providing fire suppression and human health emergency medical services, normally assigned to a 24-hour shift; duties are performed under emergency conditions and frequently involve considerable personal hazard. Assists in maintaining equipment inventory on emergency vehicles. Maintains vehicles in a clean and working order. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Associate degree with courses in fire science, emergency health sciences or related field; five to ten years related experience and/or training in fire suppression, prevention and/or emergency medical service; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid appropriate drivers license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. MUST BE 18 YEARS OLD and submit to a drug screening test. Must possess and maintain required certifications appropriate to duty assignment within the Fire/EMS department. Bilingual, Spanish/English speakers encouraged to apply.The City of Roanoke Fire-EMS, an Internationally Accredited and ISO Class 1 Fire-EMS Department, is seeking its next generation of Firefighter/Paramedics to provide emergency and non-emergency fire suppression and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) from 11 strategically located stations. The department responds to over 29,000 emergency incidents within the City’s 43 square miles annually and is a leader in the fire and EMS industry. Roanoke Fire-EMS is comprised of over 290 full and part time personnel and is a full service organization providing fire suppression, EMS, advanced care Para medicine, local and regional technical rescue, local and regional swift water rescue, local and regional hazmat and community risk reduction programs for the City of Roanoke.
Home to approximately 100,000 residents, Roanoke is a mountain city and hub for innovation offering award-winning outdoor amenities, endless trails, friendly neighborhoods with character, public art, the famous Roanoke Star, museums, craft breweries, one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants, and historical attractions.
Testing dates are October 8, October 15 and October 31. Recruit Class is scheduled for early 2027.

SUMMARYPerforms technical work providing fire suppression and human health emergency medical services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Assists in maintaining equipment inventory on emergency vehicles
Maintains vehicles in a clean and working order
Performs daily routine station and grounds cleaning and assigned maintenance as directed
Responds to fire and emergency medical services (EMS) calls and performs related emergency work as required
Provides patient care and administers basic and advanced life support techniques and treatment within approved scope of practice
Drives and operates fire and EMS apparatus on non-emergency and emergency incidents
Prepares a variety of reports and complete records as required
Assists in activities not directly related to emergencies (i.e. fire inspections, fire hydrant maintenance, and public standby situations)
May Serve as a field training officer for advance life support providers and maintain all related qualifications
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May supervise staff at an emergency scene.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
