Job Description:
In close coordination with attorneys in the Discover Legal Department, this role applies knowledge of complex legal concepts to support the legal department and businesses on a variety of legal, and regulatory matters. Actively manages and escalates risk and customer-impacting issues within the day-to-day role to management.
Responsibilities
Works independently on a variety of legal matters. Effectively and regularly communicates with in-house lawyers, other legal staff members, Discover business partners, and external counsel on legal matters. Researches legal issues and relevant topics. Investigates facts and applicable law and searches pertinent sources. Independently develops oral and/or written presentations to communicate findings. Represents the company externally to customers, vendors, opposing counsel, and government agencies and resolves legal issues using negotiation and legal experience. Identifies and escalates business issues that create risk in order to reduce risk and improve the company’s preparedness. Investigates and provides analysis and recommendations for resolution of pending and threatened litigation-related matters. Analyzes contracts, pleadings, statutes, decisions, correspondence, and other documentation to independently evaluate legal position and makes recommendations to attorneys based on legal precedence or law. Drafts legal documents, communications, and reports under minimal attorney supervision. Responsible for implementing internal processes and standards that result in improvements and efficiencies for the department and enterprise.
Supports the Litigation Team throughout all phases of the litigation process, including new case intake, fact investigation, discovery, motion practice, mediation, trial, and appeal. Conducts timely investigations to identify facts necessary to inform the company’s decision-making with respect to appropriate strategies for disposition of pending and threatened litigation. Maintains matter information in Serengeti (matter management system), including investigation data, matter status and key data metrics, and uploads pleadings and relevant documents. Communicates and collaborates with outside law firms, consumers, third parties, and business leaders to respond to pending or threatened litigation. Resolves potential and pending litigation matters in a manner consistent with applicable business objectives to protect the company’s interests. Collaborates with in-house litigation attorneys, coverage attorneys, business unit officers, directors, and staff to identify and implement risk mitigation strategies and foster efficiencies in handling legal process. Drafts and prepares reports, analyses, internal memoranda, settlement agreements, and external correspondence. Prepares company witnesses to provide written and oral testimony for use at trial and deposition.
Minimum Qualifications
At a minimum, here’s what we need from you:
Associate's Degree in Paralegal Studies, or related field
4+ years of experience in a law firm, in-house law department, or related field. For IP only, experience as a trademark paralegal in an in-house law department or firm.

The base pay for this position generally ranges between $35.24 to $49.43. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package.
