Job Duties

Western State Hospital is seeking a full time Medical Technologist to provide quality laboratory services for Western State Hospital and Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents through adequate and responsible coverage, maintenance of CAP accreditation and accurate and timely specimen analysis; oversee the Hematology department and provide clinical laboratory data in all laboratory departments through analysis of blood and body fluids to assist clinicians with diagnosis and treatment of disease; and preparing daily draw lists, consolidating orders where appropriate.

The Medical Technologist will also collect blood specimens for analysis according to facility protocol; complete all specimen collection processing, testing, documentation, QC, maintenance, training and competency according to standards established by CAP and hospital and departmental policy; completes all specimen collection processing, testing, documentation, QC, maintenance, training and competency according to standards established by CAP and hospital and departmental policy; prepares statistical reports and QC data for review by the 10th day of each month or within 5 days of receipt from QC program vendor; and properly prepares laboratory biohazardous waste for disposal.

Minimum Qualifications

- Certification (or certification-eligible) in medical laboratory science by one of the accepted accrediting agencies for medical laboratory science (i.e., ASCP); *If certification-eligible, certification must be obtained within one year of employment
- BA or BS in medical laboratory science or a related field including completion of a NAACLS-accredited school of medical laboratory science
- Must meet personnel requirements for high-complexity testing according to CLIA ’88
- knowledge of and experience with laboratory instrumentation
- basic understanding of disease and disease processes and knowledge of normal or expected levels of urine and blood components
- knowledge of quality control and purpose
- skills in maintenance of laboratory instrumentation, expertise in phlebotomy, ability to organize workload, prioritize requests when necessary, communicate effectively and control inventory for the department
- performing the essential functions of this position, which requires prolonged walking and standing on various surfaces; intermittent standing and sitting on the unit and/or in laboratory settings; repetitious bending to perform phlebotomy, manual dexterity to operate instrumentation; and the visual acuity to use/operate complex equipment or computer software
