We are looking for you to join our Mission 1 Portfolio as a Sr. Staff Chief Engineer for the Waimea Ground Segment. This position will report to the Waimea Ground Program Manager and is a full-time onsite position in Redondo Beach, CA.

This role will serve as the definitive technical authority for all aspects of engineering for the Ground Segment (systems engineering/software/support/test). The Sr. Staff Chief Engineer is the technical leader for the Waimea Ground Segment program engineering team and also serves as technical advisor to the Ground program manager.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Ownership of the Ground Segment technical baseline and oversees technical activities and collaboration across multiple IPTs within the Waimea program.
  • Maintain cognizance over technical activities within and across Ground Segment teams for requirements development, software design, integration, and verification/validation activities.
  • Solve technical problems and provide solutions that are technically sound and programmatically executable.
  • Provide technical leadership, direction and mentoring to other technical employees in the application of systems and software engineering principles, tools, and techniques to achieve practical end results.
  • Chair technical meetings such as engineering review boards, design reviews, and readiness reviews.​
  • Facilitate technical support, review, and approval of engineering documents and drawings.
  • Support program reviews as an engineering review authority, and assist in resolution of program engineering challenges (technical, financial, and staffing).
  • Drive process development, continuous improvement, and affordability initiatives.
  • Ensure that the program is adhering to sound engineering processes in the development, test, and sustainment of products for our customers and is compliant with company policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Support assessment of cost and schedule impacts of technical decisions.
  • Be the technical liaison to the program manager to ensure successful execution to project budgets and schedules.
  • Support the program manager in risk and opportunity management by identifying and owning risks associated with system performance.
  • Work across IPT teams to be able to articulate project requirements.
  • Brief internal and customer leadership on progress of work assigned.
  • Act as customer interface for all technical and execution matters related to Waimea Ground activities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM with 14 years of relevant experience; Master's degree in STEM with 12 years of relevant experience; PhD in STEM with 10 years of relevant experience
  • Active SSBI required at the time of application, and the ability to obtain SCI prior to start
  • Demonstrated technical leadership skills, decisiveness, and ability to make sound technical judgments with limited information
  • Well-versed, skilled, and disciplined in system engineering and software processes
  • Experience executing Restricted Contracts, deriving and validating requirements for software deliverables, and leading software development technical development efforts
  • Background in space systems and working knowledge of space systems, ground systems, software systems, and their design drivers
