About the role

2026 Summer Intern - Immunology Discovery

Department Summary

COPD is the third leading cause of death worldwide and, despite its prevalence, the heterogeneity of disease and underlying etiologies remain poorly understood. We are committed to understanding how alterations in the epithelial and stromal compartments of the lung contribute to the risk and severity of COPD. Utilizing cutting-edge experimental and analytical methods, we model and study epithelial and stromal dysfunction in COPD with the ultimate goal to discover novel strategies to restore tissue homeostasis, prevent exacerbations and improve lung function.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

The intern’s summer project will be focused on the mechanistic study of newly identified COPD targets. One primary objective is to establish and apply complex, human-relevant lung model systems to assess how target modulation influences alveolar epithelial type 2 (AT2) cells and their niche.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Conduct literature review and contribute to experimental design.

  • Perform 3D in vitro cell culture (e.g., lung organoids and/or co-culture systems) and/or support precision-cut lung slice (PCLS) studies.

  • Execute in vitro functional assays and downstream molecular readouts (RNA/protein), such as qPCR, immunoassays, and western blotting.

  • Support imaging-based assays (as applicable) and maintain clear experimental documentation.

  • Collaborate closely with team members and communicate progress in a highly cross-functional environment.

  • Analyze results and deliver a final poster and oral presentation summarizing findings.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
