Job Duties

Western State Hospital is seeking a full time Occupational Therapist who will plan and deliver occupational therapy treatment utilizing comprehensive and specialized approaches and provide clinical guidance to rehabilitative staff. This position will ensure that requirements of the performance planning and evaluation system are met and evaluations are completed by established deadlines with proper documentation; performance issues are addressed and documented as they occur; conduct 18-20 hours of psychosocial rehabilitation programming and assessments according to approved schedule; and complete assigned documentation according to facility and departmental guidelines.

The Occupational Therapist will also attend required in-services and departmental meetings; attend a minimum of 6 PSR staff development sessions per year; conduct at least one satisfaction survey of consumers served in group per quarter; assist with evening/weekend activities and special events as needed; supervise and/or co-supervise level 1 and level 2 OTA and OT students; and complete relevant paperwork and coordinates with other staff to organize a meaningful fieldwork experience for students.

Minimum Qualifications

- Valid Virginia Driver's license
- Graduated from an AOTA accredited Occupational Therapy program
- Licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine or eligible for licensure to be obtained within 6 months of hire
- Certified (or eligible for certification) by National Board for Certification for Occupational Therapy as an occupational therapist registered (OTR)
- Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of occupational therapy
- Ability to evaluate and interpret quantitative and qualitative data related to the client’s performance in ADLs, IADLs, sleep and rest, education, work, play/leisure, and social participation using standardized and non-standardized procedures
- Knowledge of occupational therapy practices for medical, physical/somatic, intellectual, learning, and other non-psychiatric disabling conditions, select occupational therapy theories, frames of references, and intervention models to design and deliver occupational therapy services to promote mental health and intervene with the presence of psychiatric conditions
- Ability to recommend occupation based accommodations to improve occupational engagement during individual interventions
- Ability to plan and implement client-centered psychosocial groups to enhance engagement in occupations and to collaborate with other disciplines to establish, implement, evaluate, and revise individualized treatment plans
- Ability to establish therapeutic rapport with adult psychiatric patients
- Ability to perform the essential functions of this position, which requires: repetitious walking, sitting and/or standing as part of routine work, normal visual acuity to observe and report changes in patient's behaviors on a continuous basis, bending, lifting, and reaching overhead to position, restrain, transfer, transport or escort patients, and to assist patients to perform activities
- Must maintain current licensure to practice occupational therapy in the Commonwealth of Virginia as specified the Department of Health Professions and the Virginia Board of Medicine
