Through the design and implementation of various types of research studies and the strategic interpretation of data, the mission of Humana Healthcare Research (HHR) is to produce high-quality, actionable evidence and rigorous, peer-reviewed research to improve health outcomes, guide Humana’s strategy, and advance the body of knowledge for the scientific community and society at large. HHR maintains external partnerships with healthcare industry, government, academia and others to produce research important to internal and external stakeholders.

The Health Services Research Team in HHR is seeking a Senior Research Scientist to join a team of multi-disciplinary research professionals passionate about combining and analyzing diverse types of primary and secondary data to extract actionable insights about seniors and their health-related behaviors. Our team’s areas of focus include Medicare policy assessment; evaluation of payment and care delivery models; access to care, and healthcare spending. We’re looking for driven, innovative researchers interested in using their study design and analytical skills to help improve health of seniors and drive impact on healthcare policy. A successful candidate will be familiar with healthcare policy, enjoy programming with complex administrative datasets and conducting advanced analytics, and have the interest and ability to contribute to all phases of research studies from conceptualization to dissemination.

Humana Healthcare Research is seeking a Senior Research Scientist. As part of the HHR team, you will work collaboratively to design and conduct health services and outcomes research studies:

  • Work with complex healthcare databases to complete descriptive and inferential analyses, produce statistical output and interpret results
  • Understand policy, business and clinical issues and map them into quantitative questions at the appropriate level of inquiry
  • Identify scientifically valid study designs based on research questions and available data sources
  • Contribute to study conceptualization, literature reviews and study protocol development
  • Explore internal and external data sources to understand what metrics can be produced
  • Prepare and deliver presentations, abstracts, white papers and manuscripts to communicate study findings to a broad range of audiences.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with quantitative research focus in health services research, health economics, statistics or related field
  • Experience conducting protocol based, collaborative research aimed at generating business insights and publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience extracting and summarizing data from large and dynamic real-world data sources, such as administrative claims databases and electronic health records
  • Demonstrated knowledge in econometric methodologies, outcomes research techniques, and statistical analysis
  • Experience with at least one statistical software package such as SAS, R, Python
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently to manage multiple competing projects and initiatives
  • Ability to create and document a research/analytical plan, complete in-depth analysis, and interpret results
  • Strong verbal and written communication with the ability to present analytical data and insights to a wide variety of audiences

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD with quantitative research focus in health services research, health economics, statistics or related field
  • Proficiency in observational study methods and program evaluation techniques, such as regression modeling, propensity score methods, instrumental variables, difference-in-difference, and other quasi-experimental methods
  • Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare policy and managed care

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.


 

$94,900 - $130,500 per year


 

This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
