Position Overview:

Reporting to the Vice President and General Counsel, the Assistant General Counsel functions as a junior generalist, providing legal advice and support in a variety of subject areas routinely handled by the office. The position will support many units within the University, with the opportunity to develop expertise in specific areas of interest over time. The Assistant General Counsel will cross-train to support the activities of the General Counsel and/or other more senior attorneys in the office.

Telework:

A hybrid telework schedule may be available.

Responsibilities:
  • Utilize legal expertise in advising campus partners on a wide array of business, transactional, litigation, compliance, employment, and research-related matters.
  • Work closely with the senior attorneys and legal operations team in OGC – as well as University administrators, faculty, and staff – and interact with outside counsel, other governmental offices, and University-affiliated organizations.
  • Develop and foster strong relationships with campus partners and the Office of the Attorney General staff attorneys to support strong connections with OGC.
  • Assist in developing and providing training and educational programs for administrators, faculty, staff, and other colleagues, as appropriate and as requested.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • J.D. from an American Bar Association-accredited law school and eligibility for admission to the Maryland Bar.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • A minimum of three (3) years of general legal experience, preferably with experience in providing legal advice to institutions of higher education or comparable entities, whether as in-house or outside counsel.

Salary:

Salary: $172,000 - $194,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
