Job Description

 

Newsroom Projects & Initiatives, a team dedicated to telling stories and building franchises using innovative and highly visual reporting techniques, is seeking a staff editor. The editor will assist with reporting and editing for one-off packages, ongoing series, and other upcoming work on the desk.  The staff editor will work with teams across the newsroom and have a wide range of responsibilities that include helping to conceive impactful packages, implementing workflows throughout a project or package, and helping with research needs for select projects. 

You are detail-oriented with experience with visual journalism, a great communicator, extremely organized and a self-starter able to work on a nimble, fast-paced team. Because this group works across beats, this person should be able to edit across a range of topics and in multiple storytelling formats. 

Responsibilities:

  • You will coordinate with editors and other teams on building publication plans 

  • You will write, research and edit for projects and series. 

  • You communicate editorial story budgets for special projects and other editorial projects that span various departments 

  • You will set meeting agendas and work with Project Managers to document next steps for editorial projects and process

  • Implement workflows for editing process, documents resources and timelines, digital publication process 

  • Submit digital and print content for approval within the newsroom (ex. Masthead, Standards) 

  • Document project conception and vetting process of ideas pitched as new special projects with the help of dedicated project PMs

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the Editor, Project and Collaborations

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years relevant editorial experience 

  • Superb judgment and Project Management skills

  • 5+ years of experience coordinating and aligning priorities with multiple teams

  • Passion for The New York Times mission and commitment to be part of our innovation and growth

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A collaborative approach to working on teams

  • Positive attitude, proactively taking on all parts of a project, from ideation to publish

  • Ability to meet deadlines and to adapt to a sometimes-unpredictable production environment

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $111,711.62 and $112,000.00.
