Position Description

Under the direction of the Senior Director of Career Services, the Student Support Advisor supports Helms College students by providing non-clinical emotional support, crisis intervention, and case management to students navigating personal, emotional, or psychosocial challenges. This role plays a vital part in fostering student well-being, persistence, and success by creating a safe and supportive environment, offering one-on-one advising, and connecting students to appropriate resources on and off campus.

Principle Duties

• Demonstrate the core values of Goodwill Industries by modeling service, ownership, accountability, and respect in all interactions.
• Partner with Student Services Advisor and other staff to ensure a holistic support network for students.
• Provide short-term, non-clinical support to students experiencing personal difficulties, including stress, anxiety, relationship issues, adjustment problems, and other life challenges.
• Conduct holistic wellness assessments and work collaboratively with students to develop personalized support plans.
• Maintain regular follow-up to monitor student progress and well-being.
• Serve as a first point of contact for students needing mental health or personal support services.
• Refer students to licensed counseling professionals, healthcare providers, or other community resources as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate, confidential records of student interactions in accordance with FERPA and institutional policies.
• Monitor and follow up on critical cases involving mental health, wellness, housing insecurity, and student conduct issues in coordination with campus partners.
• Refer students who disclose disabilities or challenges that may qualify for accommodations to Student Services Advisor for academic adjustments as needed.
• Develop and facilitate wellness-focused workshops and outreach events on topics such as stress management, self-care, grief, coping skills, and mental health awareness.
• Promote a campus culture of wellness and resilience through education and awareness campaigns.
• Serve as a liaison between students and faculty/staff when personal issues affect academic performance.
• Perform other work-related duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Career Services or as required by evolving student needs.

• Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Higher Education, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in student support, case management, counseling, or related student affairs functions.
  • Strong interpersonal and active listening skills.
  • Knowledge of student development and mental health trends in higher education.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and maintain confidentiality.
  • Computer literate and proficient in MS Office Suite.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications and collaboration skills.
  • Strong people skills with abilities to partner with a dynamic leadership team, other department leadership, and interact with all levels of employees.
