Professor

Candidates for this faculty rank shall be qualified for the rank of associate professor and, in addition, be a recognized national or international authority or an outstanding teacher in their field or specialization. A candidate for this rank must have a distinguished record of achievement beyond the associate professor level.

Job Description:

The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, invites qualified applications for a clinical-track faculty position at the rank of Clinical Full, Associate, or Assistant Professor in Large Animal Surgery. Although full-time is preferred, seasonal or part-time applicants may be considered. The appointee will join a dynamic surgery section consisting of five ACVS board-certified clinicians. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and proficiency in the practice of multispecies large animal surgery, including proficiency in orthopedics. We are particularly interested in experienced candidates who bring advanced clinical skills, leadership, and enthusiasm for innovation, including the development of an elective equine surgical service at our near-by satellite hospital at the World Equestrian Center and expansion of the equine elective surgical caseload.

The appointee would be assigned 60-75% of their time in clinics. Clinical duties include management of referral and direct access surgery cases, day-time emergency surgical support, and providing consultations to other services as required. Participation in a modest amount of shared after-hours is expected. Teaching responsibilities will include didactic and clinical training of professional students, graduate students, residents and interns, and participation in service activities of the Large Animal Surgery Service. Opportunities for independent or collaborative research activities exist. The appointee is expected to be involved in professional outreach, committee service, and curriculum development. 

The large animal surgery service at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville is based in the Alec P. and Louise H. Courtelis Equine Teaching Hospital. The hospital is fully equipped with dedicated colic, soft tissue, orthopedic, and standing surgery ORs, full complement of soft tissue and orthopedic surgical equipment. The orthopaedic service maintains an extensive inventory of advanced surgical implants and instrumentation, including fracture fixation systems, locking plate technology, arthroscopy platforms, and specialized spinal and minimally invasive surgical systems from DePuy Synthes, Intrauma, RIWOspine, and Arthrex. Additional capabilities include an integrated 3D printing and surgical planning service for patient-specific modelling and procedural planning, as well as a regenerative medicine platform supporting biologic therapies, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP), mesenchymal stem cell therapies, and other orthobiologic treatments. General surgery is similarly well-equipped with laparoscopy, Ligasure and Caiman bipolar vessel sealing devices, a variety of 1, 1.5, and 3m flexible endoscopes, CO2 and diode laser, electrochemotherapy unit, and intra-operative C-arm fluoroscopy. A 1.5T high-field MRI, The Steinbrenner Family CT Imaging Suite, nuclear scintigraphy suite, and 2 large digital radiography suites are located within the large animal hospital immediately adjacent to the surgery area. In addition, there is a podiatry suite with dedicated digital radiography, service specific digital ultrasonography units, a selection of climate controlled stalls, a large covered arena with concrete and sand/synthetic footing for in-hand and under saddle evaluation, and dynamic endoscopy. Faculty laboratories also provide high speed treadmill. In addition to the large animal surgery faculty there are 6 large animal DACVIM, 7 DAC
