Job Description:

This leader will design, implement, and enable execution of the Operational Risk Oversight function by working with functional risk and business leaders, Business Risk, and Internal Audit. Responsible for driving our objective of ensuring that business strategy and operations align with the risk management principles across all three lines of defense.

Provides credible and independent oversight for all aspects of operational risks across Discover. This includes challenging and advising on new products or services, issues, KRIs, and vendor engagements. Works with the business to operationalize regulatory requirements, review of business unit procedures and training for operational risk matters and provides advice and effective challenge related to regulatory and business process changes. Partners across other areas of Corporate Risk Management to ensure a holistic approach to Second Line risk management.

This role provides comprehensive operational risk oversight by leading teams of skilled resources with expertise in risk management that are dedicated to each of the risk and functional business areas. These teams will support business objectives by delivering strategic operational risk advice that reflects an advanced ability to understand and evaluate operational risk in the context of risk appetite and business objectives. Responsibilities for this area include monitoring and communication of the Program's progress of remediation efforts, metrics reporting, addressing independent assessment results, and coordination of any additional strategic risk management enablement programs and regulatory exam activities.

These responsibilities are in support and under the oversight of the Head of Non-Financial Risk Management to achieve an effective risk management framework. In addition to working with the functional risk and business leaders, Business Risk, Internal Audit, this person will have a highly visible role working closely with the Executive Committee, the VP of Risk Governance and Transformation, and other necessary stakeholders. Will drive necessary actions and will communicate and escalate status to executive and senior management, the Board of Directors and regulatory agencies.

Must have demonstrated knowledge and influence in first line operations in financial and payment/network services.

Creates a culture of effective risk management, accountability, and demonstration of risk awareness across the organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategy definition and decision making for new and evolving risk oversight programs through collaboration and influence.

  • Provides credible and independent oversight for all aspects of operational risks related to the business processes. This includes challenging and advising on new products or services, issues, KRIs, and vendor engagements.

  • Adherence and adoption of non-financial risk frameworks and methodologies, including metrics and formalized governance routines to monitor operating effectiveness

  • Interacts with senior executives, governance committees and regulatory agencies to provide (both orally and written) risk management reporting, analytics and findings in a complete and concise manner. This interaction includes the development and syndication of new strategies and practices required to improve risk management and operational efficiencies

  • People Management HR activities, including retaining top talent and supporting the risk cultural journey and necessary remediation activities. Partners across other areas of corporate risk management to ensure a holistic approach to second line risk management

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in Business Administration and Management, or Finance

  • 12 + years of Experience in risk management including analytics, modeling and risk process frameworks at a large financial institution or similar industry experience required.

  • 12+ years of Experience in regulatory remediation and/or relationship management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters in Business Administration and Management

  • 12 + years of experience in Consumer compliance, enterprise risk management, legal risk, including people management, statis
