Job Overview

Komatsu’s Mining Electrification Group is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to work on a diverse team that is electrifying existing mining machines. Specific challenges include electric motor and drive system sizing, battery and thermal management systems including DC to DC converters and breaking resistors.

Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Participate in a global group of engineers, technicians and business leaders to design and produce industry-leading hybrid and battery powered machines and chargers.
  2. Lead engineering projects to develop, maintain and support components, products and/or services per market demands, as well as for continual process improvements.
  3. Perform or conduct engineering evaluations including investigations, calculations and tests to ensure that machine components and systems meet the rigorous demands of mining applications.
  4. Provide conceptual and strategic solutions to solve problems that are associated with electrification projects.
  5. Take responsibility for one's own learning to understand existing product quickly in order to apply electrical power systems that maintain and increase machine performance.
  6. Act as a supervisor or group leader for those who are designing components, products and systems.
  7. Participate in and support programs for effective communication of engineering issues to ensure compliance with global standards for design and safety of products and services, as well as engineering best practices.
  8. Participate in and support improvements to streamline engineering processes used to design, develop, maintain and support components, products, and/or services.

Predominant Tasks

  1. Perform engineering evaluations, including calculations and testing as required, and recommend options for problem resolution.
  2. Supervise teams in performance of a specific task, project, or function.
  3. Review current designs or specific components as assigned for cost reduction.
  4. Determine the cause of a field problem, propose appropriate corrective action and provide leadership for implementation of the corrective action.
  5. Work with suppliers concerning new requirements for, or changes to their products.
  6. Advise on, set up and perform engineering tests to satisfy loosely defined requirements.
  7. Maintain awareness of and familiarity with Global and Regional regulations, standards and industry guidelines applying to KOMATSU MINING products and specific evolving regulations on electrically powered machines and battery technology.
  8. Make field trips to design and manufacturing locations as well as underground mines to observe machines in operation and gain an understanding of their application and design parameters.
  9. Support the production of prototype machines with hands on building and testing activities alongside shop, and engineering personnel.
  10. Assist in the startup of new products at underground mine sites with technical advice and support.

Qualifications/Requirements

  1. Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent relevant discipline, required.
  2. 10 years’ experience in engineering design, machine application, heavy equipment or mining industry, desired.
  3. Ability to recognize and define design problems and recommend workable solutions and/or corrective action.
  4. Experience and ability to perform in cross-functional and cross-cultural team assignments required.
  5. Experienced in the use of computer-aided design and calculation (CAD, Mathcad etc) tools, required.
  6. Participation in implementing Lean Engineering and DFMA principles, desired.
  7. Participation in effective Change Management implementation, desired.
  8. Certifications or demonstrated project management, desired.
  9. Professional registration and/or membership in committees and/or technical societies, beneficial.
  10.  Willingness to travel 10-20% to North American and global locations including manufacturing and underground mining sites.
