About the role

Job Description:

The Division of Biology and Medicine at Brown University is seeking a Technical Assistant for the Multi-Disciplinary Laboratories.

This position is responsible for the production and distribution of high-quality fruit fly media in the Drosophila Media Prep Facility, a Core facility, in the Division of Biology and Medicine; this work supports research performed in multiple laboratories. The Technical Assistant receives orders placed by laboratories via an iLabs site, produces food according to specific recipes, delivers food to labs, and orders supplies.

Job Qualifications:
Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED with 3-5 years’ related experience required.

  • Associate's Degree in science with 1-2 years’ experience desired.

  • And/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Job Competencies

  • Ability to work in a service-oriented department.

  • Ability to work well with faculty, staff, and students.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced, changing, and often stressful environment; able to prioritize tasks.

  • Ability to maintain a clean workplace.

  • Ability to follow protocols precisely and to produce media according to laboratory guidelines.

  • Ability to measure reagents accurately.

  • Ability to operate required equipment, i.e., dishwasher, autoclave, steam kettle and food pump.

  • Must possess significant computer skills to produce spreadsheets and track data.

  • Mechanical aptitude.

  • Willingness and ability to work some evenings and weekends as business needs require.
