Staff Engineer - Infrastructure Engineering
Are you ready to define the architecture that keeps Fastly’s edge software deployable, observable, and secure across every environment we operate? Our Infrastructure Engineering organization is responsible for the systems that make this possible. As a Staff Engineer, you will set technical direction and lead cross-functional initiatives that scale our deployment practices to support new partnerships with ISPs while upholding stringent reliability and security standards.
The Infrastructure Engineering organization designs and develops the underlying systems the application teams use for their solutions. This critical organization is highly collaborative to ensure robust and scalable solutions needed to continue growing Fastly’s deployment footprint. We’re looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the team working on growing our deployment models to support new partnerships with ISPs. The role will focus on adapting our deployment practices to meet changing technologies and customer requirements at the edge..
What You'll Do:
- Lead full lifecycle projects from design through global rollout in support of Fastly’s innovative technology in partner ISPs, cloud regions, and bare-metal POPs
- Design and implement foundational libraries, APIs, and automation to run Fastly or customer workloads across all edge environments
- Use a variety of technologies from Linux through cloud technologies in the development, deployment, evolution, and maintenance of the edge platform
- Analyze and address performance and stability issues to meet high scale requirements
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders on defining, developing and maintaining different deployment models based on partnerships and customers needs
What We're Looking For:
- Significant professional experience building high-reliability distributed systems.. Most Staff Engineers at Fastly have more than 7 years of related experience.
- Significant professional proficiency with Go and/or Rust and aptitude for learning new languages.
- Experience with networking/distributed/cloud systems especially Kubernetes
- Experience with debugging Linux internals either in a cloud environment or on bare metal systems
- Hands-on experience in building distributed infrastructure and maintaining it over time
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and comprehensive documentation
- A collaborative mindset with experience working across cross-functional teams, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and innovation
- Proven ability to mentor and support the growth of engineers, both within a specific area of expertise and more broadly
- An understanding of safe coding practices, release practices, and data analysis techniques
- Pragmatic approach, with a willingness to invest as much energy into maintenance as into new code
- Strong passion for detailed and timely documentation
We’ll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these:
- Understanding of security concerns in multi-tenant systems including QEMU
- Developed or supported in a zero-trust environment including secure boot, attestations
- Experience either developing or supporting Linux Kernel
- Knowledge of network protocols & functions: BGP, TCP, routing, transport
- Passion for modernizing software while ensuring continued functionality
Work Hours:
This position will require you to be available during core business hours and occasional nights and weekends as necessary to support the on-call rotation.
