Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire an Accountant for the Bureau of Construction. The successful candidate will, under general supervision, perform professional accounting and auditing work in creating files for new highway construction contract awards, establishes obligations with the Bureau of Business Services to allow for contract payments, and maintains an auditing system of payment estimates as the work progresses.
Essential Functions
- Serves as Awards Accountant for the Bureau of Construction.
- Reviews and reconciles all data in the department's automated contractor payment system with source contractual documents for all new construction contracts which are valued more than $2 billion annually.
- Reviews, corrects, and approves all contract mobilization payments (contractor set up costs) valued at $100 million annually.
- Audits contract change orders for arithmetical accuracy and compliance to departmental standards.
- Makes correcting entries as required.
- Assists the Remittance Accountant with logging payments and entering payments into the department’s contractor payment systems.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, with courses in business administration and accounting or four (4) years of technical accounting experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers elementary knowledge of professional accounting and auditing theory, principles, methods, and procedures.
- Prefers elementary knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations relating to state or non-state accounting or auditing procedures.
- Prefers elementary knowledge of office methods, procedures, standard office accounting machines, and equipment.
- Prefers ability to perform detailed work involving the application of accounting theory to routine accounting or auditing problems.
