About the role

The University of Maine School of Computing and Information Science seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position, with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2025. Our primary target focus is the broad areas of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and their applications.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Establish and sustain a dynamic research program in the field of expertise, yielding well-placed publications and supported by external awards.
  • Be an engaging teacher, adviser, and mentor at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Engage in activities to support inclusive excellence. 
  • Participate actively in the development of innovative computing curricula and recruitment of students
  • Engage in service to the School, Colleges, University, and profession

The School of Computing and Information Science is home to undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Human-Centered Technology Design, and New Media, and nine graduate programs, including two Ph.D. programs and several online MS and Certificate programs. SCIS currently has 18 full-time faculty members and enrolls approximately 360 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. The School is a member of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering and Computing.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • A PhD in computer science or a closely related discipline is required by date of hire.
  • Strong research profile in the foundations and applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence as demonstrated by relevant and recent contributions in top peer-reviewed conferences and journals.
  • Qualifications to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in computer science in the foundations and applications of machine learning.
  • Interest in research mentoring of both undergraduate and graduate students. 
  • Effective oral and written communication skills. 

Preferred:

  • Expertise and interest in the applications of ML/AI to at least one of ethics, privacy and security, human-centered computing, advanced manufacturing, agriculture/sylviculture, or sustainability. 
  • Record of effective collaboration with researchers in other disciplines.
  • Documented participation in activities promoting inclusive excellence and success in supporting students with various levels of preparation.
  • Evidence of ability to teach across multiple areas of need, including at least one of ethics, cybersecurity, and foundations of computing. 
  • Evidence of effectiveness in teaching in areas of need. 
  • Record of submitting competitive grants and obtaining extramural funding.
