R&D Analytical Material Science Engineer I
Maple Grove, MN Onsite 5 Days per week
About the role:
Apply innovative thinking, engineering first principles, and problem-solving techniques within a dynamic R&D materials science analytical services group in a global medical device company. Design and execute materials testing projects and analyze and report test data in support of new product development or commercial products, processes, or materials. Primary focus is metallography, light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, corrosion, and mechanical testing of stainless steel alloys, NiTi, and joints toward understanding material structure/property relationships for medical device design and performance.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with Lab internal customers to plan analytical test campaigns for material characterization or problem-solving.
- Organizes, executes, and maintains lab operations for metallography, mechanical testing, and corrosion testing including work queue, test instruments, accessories, calibrations, maintenance, and supplies.
- Performs metallography and tensile testing using computer-controlled COTS instruments including writing control recipes, generates experiment documentation, compiles data, interprets data, and prepares summary reports.
- Performs new equipment qualifications and writes protocols, final reports, SOP's and technical documents.
- Complies with company and department SOP’s while performing work and preparing documentation.
- Advises and directs scientific technicians on work assignments and training.
- Undertakes and successfully completes basic materials science engineering tasks to include any of the following: developing and writing test methods, maintaining equipment and laboratory documentation, validating equipment, conducting materials analytical evaluations, and peer-reviewing work of others in the department.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- B.S. Engineering Degree or more from an accredited school in Materials Science
- Experience in university material science laboratory, summer engineering internship or industry lab work experience operating equipment and instruments such as optical microscopes, microhardness testers, tensile testers, scanning electron microscopes, mounting and polishing equipment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Internship or work experience in a medical device setting preferred
- Experience with metallography and tensile testing of austenitic stainless steel and NiTi is preferred, especially hands-on experience with test method writing with MTS software
