GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION INCLUDE:

  • Responsible for outreach, planning, organization, facilitation and evaluation of challenge course and team building programs.
  • Oversight of the daily operations and inspection, maintenance, and evaluation of the indoor climbing wall.
  • Hire, train, supervise and support student challenge course facilitators and climbing wall staff.

The current skills session program is built upon helping people feel comfortable in the climbing area. The coordinator has a chance to evaluate and update the skills session program and to develop advanced classes for our more efficient climbers.

  • Be innovative in our approach to challenge course facilitation.

In September 2023, UREC opened a new challenge course and with this comes the need to develop how we plan our challenge course facilitation. This new course has stairs on both large towers to make that entire course more adaptable to patrons of all skill levels. The coordinator will help develop a plan for promoting the challenge course to the LSU Community and external entities.

  • Train and manage route setting staff.

Boulder and top rope routes in the UREC Climbing Area are designed and set by our student route setter staff. The coordinator is responsible for training and setting guidelines for route setters, creating route grade distributions, and strategically scheduling route setting shifts to keep the climbing wall new and engaging for the climbing community at LSU.

ATTRIBUTES OF THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE:

  • Someone who leads with intention regarding student development, training, and supervision of students.
  • Can create and manage a positive learning environment.
  • Ability to build relationships on campus and Baton Rouge community to engage new challenge course participants.
  • Works from a place of possibility, rather than a fixed position.
  • Someone who views outdoor recreation through a lens of creativity and play.

ABOUT THE DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS PRIORITIES:

We believe creating a sense of mattering & belonging requires us to ensure every space, place, and interaction communicates to a student that they are home. Being inclusive and accessible in our work means that as our student body begins to more closely reflect the diversity of our state, it is our duty to design programs, services, events, and experiences with everyone in mind.
