JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The purpose of this internship is to provide a learning experience related to scientific educational programming development, implementation, and evaluation. This opportunity provides interns with firsthand experience with a wide variety of aspects of education and programs, working alongside expert staff at Clark Planetarium. In addition to working at the Planetarium, the internship will also expose the intern to opportunities directly in our community.

 

Clark Planetarium provides a range of science education programs, public events, community partnerships, and collaborative projects that help advance the Planetarium’s vision of inspiring curiosity and lifelong learning. Through immersive exhibits, live demonstrations, planetarium shows, and hands-on activities, we connect people of all ages to the wonders of space and science. We work with schools, libraries, universities, community organizations, and regional partners to expand access to STEAM learning and create meaningful educational experiences. Our work focuses on astronomy and space science, while also exploring broader topics such as Earth science, technology, and the scientific process, helping our community better understand the universe and our place in it.

 

Applicants should have a strong interest in science education, public engagement, and informal learning environments. Ideal applicants enjoy sharing scientific ideas with diverse audiences, supporting hands-on activities, and helping visitors explore exhibits and programs. Opportunities are available throughout the week, with many activities taking place during evenings and weekends to support public programs, special events, and community outreach.  Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor OR Graduate program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

• Gather, interpret, and present research and data that inform scientific educational outcomes.• Aid in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of an educational program used by the Community Programs team.• Actively assist with projects as needed, including testing science demonstrations and equipment, and researching best practices and current scientific discoveries over the lifecycle of the project.• Participate in professional development opportunities developed by the Intern Coordinator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.• Data analytical skills to analyze project goals, ongoing metrics, and results. • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities in a focused and timely manner.• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team environment while balancing individual work. 

 

PAY: $18.00/hour

START DATE: The internship begins in May 2026 (start date flexible) and ends in August 2026. There may be the possibility of an extension.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Intern will work onsite at Clark Planetarium with the opportunity for participation in community events. They will be provided with access to a computer and an email account. Intern may be asked to attend meetings on and off-site (virtual). Interns may be sitting for long periods of time at a computer.

An “At Will”, FLSA non-exempt employee who is not eligible for County benefits and who must work an average of 29 hours or less per week or an average of 129 hours or less per month. 

• Must work an average of 29 hours or less per week or an average of 129 hours or less per month.
• Are not eligible for County benefits except as otherwise provided for by policy.
• Are not considered merit employees.
• Are "at will" employees who may be terminated for any reason, without notice, and without a pre-termination hearing.
