About the role

About the Team

The Sensors Division at STR focuses on technology development for advanced sensor systems and platforms in support of national security.  At STR, Defense Systems Researchers study complex defense technologies and systems by developing representative, physics-based models, analyzing data, developing metrics of performance, and evaluating against mission requirements.  In addition, the researcher will often integrate the algorithms and control systems that are critical to operations of modern defense systems.

The Systems Autonomy, Analysis, and Modeling (SAAM) Group within the Sensors Division studies and develops novel concepts for the next-generation ground-based, airborne, and space-based radar and electronic warfare systems as well as EO/IR sensor systems and platforms. We perform analysis using a combination of low, medium, and high-fidelity modeling, simulation, and analysis tools to inform systems designs and requirements. SAAM also develops concepts for distributed collaborative mission systems that leverage autonomy algorithms and Artificial Intelligence as well as data fusion techniques. Our main customers are the Air Force, Navy, and DARPA.

The Role:

The SAAM Group is seeking a Lead Integrated Capabilities Analyst to develop and analyze mission system concepts and algorithms for Next-Generation Radar, Electronic Warfare, and EO/IR systems and assess the performance and survivability of these systems in a variety of scenarios. Beginning with mission objectives, you will work with engineers with a wide range of expertise to define new system concepts for and new uses for existing systems.  Many of our modeling efforts require complex simulation environments such as AFSIM and the Joint Simulation Environment (JSE) as well as STR-developed simulations. This role involves critical assessment of the performance and survivability of operational systems within complex and dynamic scenarios using existing and novel modeling and simulation frameworks. As a lead member of the team, you will spearhead efforts to define innovative concepts, evaluate their performance, and ensure their viability against modern threats, including advanced mobile air defenses. Your products will be assessments and evaluations of system performance.  You will summarize your findings in technical reports and presentations to government customers and STR Leadership. Your expertise in radar and associated technologies will be pivotal in maintaining and advancing our simulation architecture to support large-scale evaluations.

Interviews for this role will require an in-person or virtual presentation.

What you will do:

  • Develop and implement sensor, platform, and threat models within simulation environments
  • Utilize and enhance simulation tools, incorporating real-world data, to conduct in-depth studies of system performance and effectiveness
  • Design, develop, validate, and manage large-scale simulations, with a focus on sensing and counter-sensing technologies
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on the capabilities of current and future US and threat weapon systems, sensors, and platforms
  • Synthesize complex data into actionable insights, providing strategic assessments and evaluations to inform defense planning and decision-making.
  • Prepare and deliver comprehensive technical reports and presentations to government customers, articulating the implications of simulation findings on national security

Who you are:

  • Active Security Clearance at the Secret or Top Secret (TS) level, for which U.S. citizenship is needed by the U.S government
  • BS, MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related field
  • Minimum 5-7 years of related work experience depending on degree (BS + 7 years, MS + 5 years, PhD + 2 years)
  • In-depth knowledge of remote sensing & counter-sensing technologies including airborne/surface-based radar and electronic warfare, and EO/IR sensing systems
  • Demonstrated experience with either AFSIM or the Joint Simulation Environment
  • Expertise in one or more scientific programming languages, such as C/C++, Python, or MATLAB
  • Proven ability to develop modeling and simulation tools
  • Experience using source code management (Git, Subversion)
  • Expertise in platform dynamics, including aerodynamics and orbital dynamics
  • Exceptional technical writing and communication skills, with experience in delivering high-stakes presentations to government and military stakeholders
