Assistant Professor of Cello, Lamont School of Music

As the University’s largest and most varied academic unit, the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is comprised of artists, learners, performers, scholars, scientists, and teachers across 21+ departments, programs, schools, and centers and acts as a central hub where many of the University's disciplines intersect. Nearly all 6,000 undergraduates at the University take liberal arts courses with us, and about one-third of these students declare a first major in a CAHSS program. Most of our departments, programs and schools offer master's or doctoral programs. CAHSS scholars, artists, instructors, staff, and students collaborate in a shared quest for knowledge about the human condition and the development of skills to improve our local and global communities. The diverse scope of CAHSS allows our students to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed at nearly any career in today’s global society.

Position Summary

The University of Denver Lamont School of Music seeks an artist-teacher of Cello at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure-track, to join its faculty in Fall (September) 2026. We invite candidates with demonstrable success as performers who will be active in recruiting students and who understand the changing landscape and challenges faced by today’s musicians. Consideration will be given to experience and expertise in specific areas such as chamber music, orchestra, world, jazz, folk, or contemporary music. We seek a supportive and collaborative colleague who demonstrates a commitment to inclusive pedagogy, as they teach Lamont students to become artist-citizens committed to the public good.

Essential Functions

• Teach in-person studio lessons in Cello and related courses
• Coach chamber ensembles
• Mentor and advise students
• Actively recruit students, individually and collaboratively with colleagues
• Maintain an active, dynamic performance career
• Serve on School of Music, College, and University governance committees as assigned or elected
• Contribute to successful string, orchestral, and chamber music programs at Lamont

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Music or at least 5 years of equivalent professional experience and accomplishment
• Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and effectiveness at the undergraduate and/or graduate level
• Record of accomplishment as a performer

Preferred Qualifications

• National or international reputation as a performer
• Proven record of teaching and recruiting at the university level
• Ability to utilize inclusive teaching practices and work effectively with diverse populations
• Desire to move the field forward and prepare high-level musicians for the rapidly changing world of today.

Working Environment

• Standard high-level music school setting
• Noise level is moderate to high

Physical Activities

• Ability to use a computer for an extended period
• Occasionally required to move about the office/campus
• Moderate lifting required

Work Schedule

Full-time, 9-month appointment. Work schedule to be determined with the Director of the Lamont School of Music.
