About the role

The Division of General Medicine at Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School (HMS), seeks junior or mid-career research faculty in Palliative Care.

The Division’s clinical programs encompass primary care, hospital medicine, and palliative care. The activities of the Division’s Section for Research cluster around six interdisciplinary programs: aging, cardiovascular health, integrative whole health/mind-body medicine, medical transparency, shared decision-making, and placebo studies. Eighteen M.D. and Ph.D. investigators conduct research, seek external funding, and provide mentoring within Harvard’s general medicine and integrative medicine fellowships.

M.D. and/or Ph.D. required, with palliative care research interests aimed at improving care for persons experiencing serious illness. The Section for Research takes particular pride in mentoring and has been recognized with HMS’s Program Award for a Culture of Excellence in Mentoring. Future opportunities also exist for professional growth and mentorship given the recently announced BIDMC-Dana Farber Cancer Institute Collaboration.

M.D.s would have board-certification/board-eligibility in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM), practicing in our well-established BIDMC palliative care program’s inpatient consult service and/or ambulatory practice. In these settings, they provide clinical care to patients referred for complex symptom management and facilitation of decision-making in a wide spectrum of serious illnesses. Mid-career candidates would also provide research mentorship to facilitate our growing Palliative Care clinical faculty’s scholarly goals.
