Senior AI Automation Engineer - (Remote - US)

Please note: This role is contingent upon a contract award. While it is not an immediate opening, we are actively conducting interviews and extending offers in anticipation of the award.
ICF is seeking a Senior AI Automation Engineer to support a major data modernization initiative with the Department of Transportation. This role is critical to accelerating and improving the accuracy of code development during the migration from legacy Oracle systems to a modern data analytics platform. The Engineer will lead the design, deployment, and continuous improvement of an AI automation sandbox that empowers engineers and developers to leverage cutting-edge AI-augmented development tools.
Job Location: This is a remote position. Occasional travel to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area may be required for key client meetings.
What you’ll be doing:
Architect and maintain an AI automation sandbox environment using tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot Agent, and AWS Q.
Lead context engineering efforts to ensure relevant codebases, documentation, and data sources are accessible and searchable by agentic coding assistants.
Integrate and manage access to MCP servers, Unity Catalog, and legacy Oracle databases within the sandbox.
Collaborate with developers and data engineers to optimize workflows and ensure tool functionality.
Report to the Technical Lead and serve as a technical resource across engineering teams.
What you must have:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, AI/ML, or a related field.
5+ years of relevant experience
Proven experience with Generative AI and LLM-augmented code development tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot Agent, AWS Q).
Expertise in context engineering and agentic frameworks beyond basic RAG applications.
Strong proficiency in Python and SQL.
Familiarity with AWS services and infrastructure for deploying and managing AI tools.
Understanding of Agile methodologies and DevSecOps practices.
Must be eligible for federal clearance and pass a background check.
What we’d like you to have (preferred):
Experience with MCP servers, Databricks, Unity Catalog, Spark, and Oracle systems.
Familiarity with government data systems.
Background in large-scale data migration projects.
