About the role

We are seeking a Standardized Patient. The Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center is a state-of-the-art medical training facility that incorporates instruction and assessment of medical students, residents, and other clinicians (“learners”). The main goal of the Simulation Center is to improve safety within patient care. Current and future health care professionals use simulation to hone their skills, refine advanced techniques, and learn social interactive tools for delivering important news to patients. This is vital for creating the gold-standard in patient safety and medical teaching.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Standardized Patients portray a common complaint/condition for educational and/or assessment events. A Standardized Patient (SP) must be able to standardize the portrayal of emotional and physical aspects of patients or patient family members.
  • Allow learners to practice physical health assessment techniques.
  • Accurately evaluate learners.
  • Deliver written and/or verbal feedback.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Related work experience as a standardized patient, health professional, instructor or actor is preferred.
  • Experience working with computer.


Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience as a Standardized Patient, a health professional, an instructor, or an actor.
  • Experience working with Zoom or similar teleconferencing platforms.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Communicate articulately.
  • Provide constructive feedback.
  • Observe and remember learners’ behavior for accurately evaluating their competencies.
  • Possess interpersonal skills when working with clinical learners.
  • Must be able to complete checklists on a computer.


Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to document legibly using writing instrument or computer.
  • Must be able to sit or lie down for up to 30 minutes at a time.
  • Must be able to portray the emotional and physical aspects of a patient or family member and/or utilize body to instruct learners.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
