Responsibilities

The Clinical Abstractor is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and submitting accurate, reliable clinical data to program-specific registries. This role supports quality improvement initiatives through precise data screening, documentation, and entry into designated clinical databases. The Clinical Abstractor collaborates closely with physicians and other clinical staff to identify improvement opportunities and contribute to special projects. For positions assigned to the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery program, the Clinical Abstractor is responsible for identifying and abstracting 100% of all metabolic and bariatric procedures performed at the facility into the MBSAQIP Registry, ensuring complete and accurate reporting in accordance with program standards.  

Qualifications

Education
  • Successful completion of a nursing education program required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred
  • Master's Degree in Nursing preferred
  Experience
  • 3 years of experience as a Registered Nurse required
  • 5 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, with the ability to work with interdepartmental teams preferred
  • Data analysis and clinical chart review experience preferred
  • Database data entry and/or management experience. Statistical knowledge. Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience preferred
  • Cardiac or Critical Care (CCU/ICU) experience

  • Experience with EKG rhythms, know troponins, and understand key findings of acute changes in a patient. (ED/Telemetry may be acceptable?

  • Experience pulling and reviewing data/graphs.

  • Experience with Epic (or specific Epic modules/reading specific types of notes).

  • Experience with Performance Improvement (PI) projects .

  • Experience with clinical ladder projects or manager-led chart audits.

Licenses and Certifications

  • RN - Current and valid Registered Nurse license to work within the state of California required
