Rail Vehicle Maintenance Trainer

About the role

Basic Function

Works closely with the Director, Rail Vehicle Maintenance and/or Superintendents in maintaining the Rail Vehicle Maintenance training program.  Under the direction of the Director, Rail Vehicle Maintenance and/or Superintendents will provide classroom and field instruction for Rail Vehicle Maintenance personnel.  Will assist in providing course evaluation of vendor training program.   Provides “hands-on” maintenance training for Light Rail Vehicles, Bench Test Equipment (BTE), Wheel Lathe, and support equipment.  Assists in the evaluation and creation of Rail Vehicle Maintenance Work Instructions.  Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.

Responsibilities and Specific Duties

  • Assists in the development of a comprehensive “hands on approach” training program for all the rail vehicle maintenance disciplines and shops.
  • Assists in the development of lesson plans, instructor guides, student guides, tests (both written and practical), instructional aids, job aids, work instructions and other training aids in pursuit of providing a highly skilled and highly motivated work force at METRO-Rail.
  • Reviews and provides feedback on vendor training submittals.  Audits approved vendor training classes.
  • Assures vendor contract compliance of approved training submittals.
  • Coordinates classroom and equipment availability (Overhead Projectors, Data Projectors, equipment mock-ups, etc.) and other equipment as necessary to provide both vendor and in-house training sessions.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of certification programs and re-certification programs for all Rail Vehicle Maintenance (Professional Qualification Sheet).
  • Performs classroom, shop, and field training sessions.
  • Performs technical performance audits, identifies training needs, and recommends training requirements to the Rail Vehicle Maintenance Director and/or Superintendents.
  • Prepares scheduled and special reports providing updates on training status and requirements.
  • Updates training materials and tests, as well as maintenance and operating procedures to reflect revisions in equipment.
  • Assists the Rail Vehicle Maintenance Director and/or Superintendents in accident investigations and recommends corrective actions as necessary. Prioritizes training activities to reflect operations and maintenance needs.
  • Assists in training program development and implementation for all Rail Vehicle Maintenance operating personnel.
  • Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education Requirement

High school diploma or GED is required. Associate degree in electrical engineering or related degree is preferred.

Years & Experience Required

Minimum four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience Light Rail Vehicle maintenance.  This experience will assist with the training, and the assessment and development of technical education programs in electrical and mechanical maintenance of light rail vehicles.  Will use self-paced online training software Visual Content Creation for development. Lead/Supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge & Skills Required

Excellent communications (written/verbal) and interpersonal skills are required.  Ability to communicate effectively with adult students of various backgrounds and skill levels, vendors, and others to resolve training issues.  Visual Content Creation for self-paced online training development experience is preferred.
